From TalkingBizNews comes word that the Dallas Morning News has a real estate reporter ready to take over after Steve Brown retires on March 1.

Brown, a legend in Dallas for his prolific real estate reporting, helmed the beat as real estate editor for decades. Under Brown’s tutelage, former DMN real estate writer Mitchell Parton was brought in to assist on the beat only to leave for the Dallas Business Journal after a year. That left the door open for new blood at the only daily newspaper in Dallas.

We received confirmation that Nick Wooten is the man for Steve’s old job. According to a missive from Kyle Arnold, assistant business editor at the DMN, Wooten comes from Atlanta, where he worked at the NBC affiliate 11Alive as an investigative reporter spending the last year or so covering the Fulton County criminal trial against former President Donald Trump’s and his election tampering charges.

Prior to that, Arnold said, Wooten was an investigative and accountability reporter at the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer in Georgia, where he covered the COVID-19 pandemic and elections. He has won several reporting awards from the Georgia Press Association.

He is well-equipped “to dig into public filings, deeds, and government agendas while his investigative skills will bring depth to our real estate team as he covers the issues of growth and affordability that come with Dallas-Fort Worth,” Arnold said in his missive.

Wooten started his career in Shreveport, Louisiana. Other information offered up about the new-to-the-beat reporter:

  • Mr. Wooten grew up in Augusta, Ga. and has a classic Southern drawl
  • His father worked at the Augusta Chronicle, his hometown newspaper
  • Learned colors and numbers from watching NASCAR races as a child
  • Graduated from Mercer University in Macon, Ga., where he majored in journalism and Southern studies (which I just learned is a thing)
  • Has two cats, Wendy and Bea
  • Plays guitar, loves museums and presidential history.
  • Favorite journalism interview was singer-songwriter Jason Isbell
