Follow the Gayborhoods: Two Pricey Dallas Hoods Make Top Ten List of Most Gay-Saturated Cities

According to one of my favorite real estate websites, Trulia, Dallas ranks No. 8 among the nation’s most “gay-friendly” cities, speaking of real estate. And, the top 10 list of these gay-friendly neighborhoods in each city also happen to coincide with the pricest markets and neighborhoods in those cities. In otherwords, Trulia is just verifying something we already know: want your real estate to appreciate in value? Follow the Gayborhood!

How they did this: Trulia used U. S. Census bureau data to identify zip codes with the heaviest concentrations of same-sex households. They compared this to the median price per square foot of homes listed in those zip codes. In 2010, the Census Bureau reported about 646,000 same-sex households, or .6 percent (that’s point six) of the nation’s 117 million households.

Still, Trulia cautioned the Census data required some “adjustments”, since the agency doesn’t ask about sexual orientation. I would venture to say there are way more than .6 percent same-sex households in the U.S., wouldn’t you? Here are the top 10 gay-friendly cities/neighborhoods and the cost of buying a home there — follow the Gayborhood!

8. City: Dallas

Neighborhood: Oak Lawn, average price per square foot: $160

Neighborhood: Lake Highlands, average price per square foot, $128

Actually Midway Hollow, adjacent to Bluffview and Preston Hollow is one of the top 10 "precincts" for GLBT households in Dallas. Oak Lawn and Kessler Park are the highest concentration of GLBT households in the city obviously.

There are more than a dozen lesbian and gay couples in The Meadows and most have been here for years. The Meadows is east of Hillcrest High (Airline Rd.) south of Meadow Rd., north of Walnut Hill Lane. Several homes were remodeled by gay couples who have moved on to other projects. Zip: 75230.

I totally agree with Wyman. I live in the neighborhood and surprisingly to find quite a few gay couples in the The Meadows. It is a great neighborhood so centrally located and accessible to Central Expressway and Tollway. Shopping is very convenient along with great restaurants. Lots of great homes in the neighborhood. Thumbs up to zip code 75230.

We've know this for years. but Federal Fair Housing laws have kept the official conversation away from the marketplace. I've alwasys wished I could use "Fabulous updates by Gays" in MLS, but the Boardi s so funny about the things they'll let us say. Gay vandalism: that's when my people buy original owner homes, remodel them and raise the property values of the neighborhood.

Sparkman, Royal Hills, Royal/Marsh Estates, Disney Streets, Walnut Hill Home Assoc — just a few other specific neighborhoods where we have a high concentration of wonderful gay neighbors that have contributed to renovations vs tear downs and some marvelous remodels. I find this a great testiment to living in Dallas and something people moving in from out of state find appealing, as well as locals.

I'm moving to Dallas from the west coast and very much appreciate this advice. My gay friends were absolutely the BEST neighbors in San Fran or as we referred to them our "gay-bors" and we miss them. Looks like with your advise Candy we will find new "gaybors"!
