There’s Some Dramatic High Style Inside This Caruth Hills Tudor Cottage

You can never tell a book by its cover. That is particularly true of this Caruth Hills Tudor cottage. The cheery white facade creates an expectation of an interior filled with William Morris wallpapers, Colefax and Fowler chintz, and country house charm. Think again. You are in for some real style and drama here.
I was drawn to that charming exterior, but the minute I got to the third photo, I was absolutely delighted to find an extraordinarily different home that defied my expectations in the best possible way.
The owners obviously love color and embrace it boldly. The photo that stopped me in my tracks is the one of the dining room. That inky dark color on the walls looks a lot like Sherwin-Williams Anchors Aweigh, or Farrow and Ball’s Off-Black, but I cannot swear to either. However, those are the first copycat colors I’d try to achieve this rich look.
Saturated dark color continues across the entry in the lounge with those Muir swivel chairs in oxblood velvet with what appears to be a Vulcan mirror by Stefan Bishop. This is such an excellent example of how to take an original formal living room and turn it into a spot that you will actually use and enjoy.
The original 1946 fireplace remains in the open-plan family room, but it received a refreshing coat of white paint, allowing focus to move from the updated kitchen, with a peek into the terracotta-drenched breakfast room, and around to the pool outside.
The primary suite continues the theme with what looks like a soft lime wash of blacks and grays on the walls, and an arrestingly beautiful matte black soaking tub is the focal point of the bathroom.
Now, don’t get me wrong, if you are a fan of cozy English charm, you’ll find it upstairs. The adorable kids’ rooms are tucked into the eaves, and a fanciful striped playroom opens into a guest room at one end. There is also an expansive secondary living area and bar on this floor that overlooks the pool and turfed backyard.
If you are not familiar with Caruth Hills, it is just north of the Park Cities; however, many of the houses, like this one, are zoned to Highland Park ISD. This is a rare opportunity for a move-in-ready house in a great school district.
