modern masterpiece

If the design of this modern masterpiece looks familiar, it’s because it’s by the same architect that was responsible for the Dallas Museum of Art.

Edward Larrabee Barnes was commissioned by art collectors to design a futuristic home to house their collection. Barnes is notable not just for the DMA and this incredible modern masterpiece, but also for the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and the IBM Building at 590 Madison Avenue in Manhattan. In 2007 he was posthumously awarded the American Institute of Architects’ Gold Medal. There is no lack of world-class architecture in our city, and this home is one of our most stunning examples.

A monumental limestone staircase descends into the living room.

It often takes a newcomer to help us appreciate what Dallas offers, especially when it comes to architecture. Recently I had guests in town from London. They were bowled over by our architecture. That’s right, Dallas impressed the Brits!

Milligan

The Halum team includes Faisal Halum, Bill Churchill, Jeanne Milligan, and Michael Mahon.

Jeanne Milligan long aspired to join the Faisal Halum team at Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s. In May, the move came to fruition when she officially joined the top-producing trio of Halum, Bill Churchill, and Michael Mahon. She says that she hasn’t stopped working since, which is exactly what she’d hoped for.

“I wanted to work for Faisal because of his success and professionalism. The properties he has listed are the cream of the crop and he has a great eye for design,” Milligan said. “He also has great hip pocket listings and is very well thought of in the community. And he’s great to work for.” (more…)

Modernist Masterpiece

I got a bit giddy when I came across this Highland Park Modernist masterpiece designed by the legendary Bud Oglesby. As I go in search of a home for our Monday Morning Millionaire each week, I try to find something that is not only in the ultra-luxury price range but also has a story to tell.

Dallas has some of the finest residential architecture in the world. That fact often makes me pause and wonder why buyers so often settle for the mundane white box when there are homes like this Modernist masterpiece for sale. Architect-designed homes are timeless. Sure, you may need to update a bathroom or a kitchen, but you should do that on any house over 10 years old.

An architect-designed house is going to last forever, if — and that is a big if — there is a buyer that understands and values that home. It takes a certain level of taste, experience, and intelligence to appreciate a marvelous Modernist masterpiece. Fortunately, this is Dallas, and we have a lot of tasteful, intelligent buyers.

This Modernist masterpiece at 3709 Lexington Avenue was built for the Deals, who were patrons of the Dallas Museum of Art. It is widely believed to be the last residence Oglesby designed. In the 1993 Dallas Morning News obituary for Oglesby, architecture critic, David Dillon wrote the following:

“Honesty in materials, simplicity of form, sensitivity to place, this was the Oglesby canon, and it changed very little over the years.”

Our Inwood House of the week is a Midway Hollow contemporary designed by the award-winning architecture firm of Larsen and Pedigo. This one story 4,500-square-foot home on just under a half acre is beyond stunning.

I cannot imagine a better house for art collectors, people who love to entertain, or even families. One-level living is in.  If you want to climb stairs, hit the Stairmaster at the gym and make those steps count. If you have kids, you know as well as I do there is no such thing as an elegant, architecturally sensitive baby gate! Yes, one-story living is the wave of the future, and it does not get better than 4139 Rosa Road. (more…)

To describe it as a masterpiece seems like an understatement. We’ve featured the Philip Johnson House before and it never fails to take our breath away. Set on nearly seven acres at 10210 Strait Lane, the estate of Naomi Aberly and Larry Liebowitz is listed at $27.5 million and is the only Phillip Johnson house to have been built in Dallas. It’s a beloved architectural landmark and an example of what a fastidious restoration can achieve.

“I’m honored to list what I believe to be one of the most significant architect-designed homes in the country,” said Faisal Halum, executive vice president of Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty. “The fact that it has already been meticulously restored, yet completely updated for the way a modern family lives today makes this a once in a lifetime opportunity.  This is a dream home for a true admirer of great architecture. It is truly unique, in a setting that will never be duplicated.”
