Live Like Eloise at The Plaza in this Mansion Residences Art Deco Masterpiece

Anyone who has read “Eloise at The Plaza” has wondered what it would be like to live in a luxury hotel. The Mansion Residences on Turtle Creek Boulevard deliver that experience and more. Owners have access to all of the amenities the Mansion offers, including room service, 24-hour security, dog walkers, the pool and gym, and so much more, that is, if you can find an available condo.

Fortunately, one just listed. It’s a jaw-dropping Art Deco masterpiece. I was lucky enough to be invited to see it before it listed and can attest that it’s even more beautiful in person than in the photos.

Designed by New York’s Darius Toraby Architects PC for oil heiress Mrs. J.W. Griffith, it is a showcase of Art Deco detail. The firm is so proud of this project that over 25 years later, it’s still displayed on their website. Griffith was one of the first owners, along with movers and shakers like oilman T. Boone Pickens, cheerleading pioneer Lawrence Herkimer, and philanthropist and heiress Nancy B. Hamon. Realtor Judy Pittman had sold 20 of the 23 units by the time the shell was completed in 1994.

It was, and continues to be, the most sought-after luxury high-rise in Dallas, if not Texas. That is in large part because of the amenities and location, but the real draw is that there are only two residences on each floor, with two exceptions. During the shell stage, one owner purchased an entire floor and another combined two units to make a two-story apartment.

The building was designed in the Spanish Mission style by BOKA Powell. They worked with Rosewood Property Company and the Dallas Landmark Commission to ensure the Mansion Residences blended seamlessly with the existing restaurant and hotel.

What sets Unit 8W apart is the masterful Art Deco interior design. From the moment you cross the threshold, the detail is flawless perfection. The foyer is a symphony of blond burl wood with multiple etched glass doors inspired by Parisian estates. These doors lead to one of the two balconies, the dining room, and the grand living room. The brass hardware was cast from original molds used at the Paris Opera House, and the marble is perfectly book-matched.

The showstopper, however, is the semi-circular living room’s gold-leafed, star-shaped cove ceiling framing a 1920 Salerno French light fixture. Custom carpet was created to mimic the ceiling design.

The living room opens to the library, which is wrapped in sycamore paneling with a black marble fluted fireplace finished with bronze end plates as the centerpiece.

Art Deco style never ends in this Mansion Residences unit. The kitchen features dramatic black lacquer cabinets, and the powder room has a glass panel etched with seaweed and a floating mermaid, black marble floors, a silver ceiling, and starburst hardware!

The piece de resistance of this apartment is the primary suite’s dual bathrooms set in a sea of blue mirrored glass and Italian marble. The floors are heated, and there’s a coffee bar. What more could you ask for?

With 5,302 square feet, two bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, and furniture available to purchase, this is an extraordinary opportunity to live in absolute glamor, comfort, privacy, and security. I’m sure Eloise would approve.
