Monday Morning Millionaire is Truly One of the Most Romantic, Downton-Abbeyesque Homes in Dallas: The Mmm Mansion

I teased this house in last week’s round-up for CultureMap Dallas, but here is a little more on the story of a home I have wanted to bring to your attention for several months. The M Mansion (or Mmm 5540 North 40 Place) is in far north Dallas, and because my precious son got married there, I think it is the most romantic home in Dallas right now.

Well, I have always loved those white columns at Mt. Vernon. Sigh. My very first boyfriend lived in a home with white columns and a black and pink tiled powder bath in Barrington Hills, Illinois — I have wanted both ever since. As for him, not so much.

You’ve heard of the hairdressing chain Toni and Guy? This is the Guy Mascolo family who commissioned this mansion to be built way up in the North Dallas Forty in 2007. The North Dallas Forty is an enclave of estates off Frankford Road, in between Preston and the tollway, north side. Very wooded, secluded and private. The area has a casual gate and security code to get in, so you get a ranchy feel. Legend has it Flora and Guy Mascolo, founders of Toni & Guy salons, built the M Mansion as their dream house, pouring love into every nook and cranny, from the red Baccarat chandelier to the arches, columns, and many fireplaces and Juliet-type balconies.

The 15,000 square foot plus home was built by Ventura Custom Homes, fabulous home builders who also constructed a notorious spec home you may recall at 3415 Beverly Drive beginning in 2008 that took awhile to sell, since it was conceived and birthed during the housing bust. But sell it did with Erin Mathews on October 21, 2010 for $6,995,000, which was the lowered asking price. I think Ellen Terry started with it at $9,750,000. Those were the days when no one blinked at a $12 million listing…

Which is what they are asking now for the M Mansion: $12 million cool and easy.

Comparing that, 3415 was sure a bargain for almost 12,000 square feet on one-third of an acre on Beverly Drive… someone sure got a steal! There was a courtyard with loggia and fireplace, full spa room, security room, theater with sitting area, game room, wine cellar, and the most beautiful “her’s” master bath in Dallas.

I show you this so you can appreciate the universal fine craftsmanship of Ventura. The French chateau-inspired M estate took seven years to complete. You get 3.29 wooded acres with a secret garden, fenced soccer field covered in turf, and stone waterfall pool with hidden grotto in the pool. (I am told there is a hidden grotto, I never dove in to check it out!)  Inside there are nine bedrooms, nine baths, powders, offices and wine cellar lower level. The home actually has four levels. Ventura is famous for their ground floor/basements: this one has bedrooms, the theater and the bar/wine cellar which came in very handy during the wedding. Plus there’s an outdoor pizza oven and bar and patio oasis with multiple gardens. There is a small fortune here in masonry. I love the cobblestones and stonework, which evokes a Granada like feel from the very moment you drive up.

There are also several balconies, including the romantic portico where the wedding ceremony took place. Then there’s the Secret Garden in the front where photos are taken in the perfect setting. My son’s precious in-laws treated him to a beautiful wedding chez M last fall, and more than 100 people spilled out on the grounds and throughout the house, ohhing and ahhing. The Pennsylvania crowd was blown away, and the Cali crowd was salivating. A home like this would list for $30 million on the Peninsula.

Why are they selling? The end of the love story is tragic, sad to say, as most love stories often are. Flora lost her precious Guy, and the Mascolos have multiple homes, so it is perhaps time to part with their beloved M Mansion and let another family take over for many more years of romantic, loving Mmmemories.M Mansion patio M Mansion fountain M Mansion master M Mansion pool m mansion family m mansion kitchen m mansion library m mansion master bath M Mansion wine cellar M Mansion DR M mansion study M Mansion portico
