College living isn't what it used to be!

The Skyrock Condos are only two blocks from the Texas Christian University campus in Fort Worth.

Close your eyes and think about where you lived in college. Did you enjoy the dorm experience?  How about an off-campus apartment up multiple flights of stairs?  Maybe you lived in a house during your college experience?

I started college living in a dorm room that might have been a 10-foot-by-10-foot square.  It was cozy, to say the least. (Especially with my potluck roommate’s 15 bottles of Chaps cologne … beats me why.)

I finished my four-plus years of higher learning by cramming five guys into a three-bedroom, one-bathroom house, which was a total blast.  I think I paid $350 per month in rent.  I’d do all of it all over in a heartbeat, too!

It takes a bit of magic to snag a house in Fort Worth’s historic Berkeley Place. Most homes trade hands by word of mouth, and people stay put in the neighborhood. They simply up size or downsize as their lifestyles change. So, we were thrilled to discover our Inwood Home of the Week, a gorgeous, recently renovated Berkeley Place Colonial Revival at 2012 Ward Parkway. (more…)

4258 Altura Front

Let’s head west to Fort Worth this morning, where we’ll find an incredible modern home that has fantastic museum-worthy interiors and has some huge windows overlooking the heavily treed lot.

This home at 4258 Altura Road in the Westcliff neighborhood is an amazing 1980s modern that feels so fresh and open. It has aged so well, and with a few updates it can be a post-millennium stunner. It’s just south of TCU and north of Interstate 20, a fantastic location for anyone who wants to live inside Cowtown and close to tons of great shopping and amenities.

Designed by architect Emory Young, this home was constructed to take advantage of the change in elevation on this more than 1 acre lot. The result is a tree house-like feel, with huge floor-to-ceiling windows with views of treetops and blue sky.

It’s serene, really, and considering the condition of this home and the size of the lot, it’s priced exceptionally well — $1.695 million with Suzanne Burt of Burt Ladner Real Estate. Besides excellent design, you get five bedrooms, four full and one half bath, and more than 5,500 square feet.

Besides the views, I love the courtyard like patio and pool, which you can see from the expansive kitchen and breakfast area. Really, this home has so much light from the windows and transoms that you’ll hardly ever need to flip a switch! It has tons of storage, too, so you don’t have to clutter your floors or walls, and there’s a three-car garage as well.

The master bedroom is huge at 21 x 20, and features huge windows and a separate sitting area, including a fireplace. The layout is great, with built-in storage and desk at an angle from the bed area, which means you can leap from your slumber at the moment of inspiration and bang out the next chapter of the next great American novel without waking your partner. The master bath will need some updating, but considering the size and location of this home, any updates will pay off significantly in the future. I can imagine tons of marble and a cool contemporary soaking tub (and maybe even an oversized steam shower!) in this master bath, which has even more fantastic views, thanks to the adjoining balcony. Imagine coming from the bath on a warm day and having a little air dry out there? Perfection.

Outside, well, this backyard is a dream. You can either enjoy a soak in the pool and spa, or enjoy the views from the deck. What do you think of this modern home in Fort Worth?

2213 Stanley Ave Front

Let’s talk Tarrant County, folks, specifically Cowtown. Fort Worth, which is rated as a growth market and prime for investment by Trulia and Local Market Monitor, has some outstanding deals that are sure to make any homeowner happy.

Take this Tudor, for instance. It’s in the sought-after Berkeley Place neighborhood just east of Forest Park and South University Drive. Close to the Fort Worth Zoo and with great access to downtown Fort Worth, this neighborhood has a treasure trove of fabulous architecture at some outstanding prices.

At 2213 Stanley Avenue you’ll find a beautiful 1926 Tudor with three bedrooms, two baths, and a garage apartment for listed by Brants Realtors for $349,500. The garage apartment, which is a one-bedroom, one-bath unit with an open floorplan, could be a source of income should the neighborhood zoning allow it. You could definitely fit a Texas Christian University student in there comfortably.

2213 Stanley Ave Breakfast

In fact, this is one of those outstanding homes that you could buy as an investment while your child attends college nearby. Once they’ve graduated, spiff the place up to perfection (that means updating the kitchen countertops, the hall bath, and the powder room) and sell it for some real dough. Your child could live there rent-free, and you could lease it to two or three of her Greek sisters or brothers, or band members, or whatever — you get the drift. With that income, you could make a profit or perhaps break even in the meantime!

With 1,880 square feet of living space, you won’t be hurting for room, either. The master bedroom, has a separate entrance, which is a plus, privacy-wise. There’s also a dual carport, which definitely helps with off-street parking, and there’s a laundry and storage area below the garage apartment.

The backyard features a lovely elevated deck, too, as well as a spacious lawn and privacy fence. The apartment’s square footage isn’t included in the total, and wasn’t available in the listing. The unit, pictured above, seems big enough for a student, for sure. And there is enough charm and care to make this a comfortable spot for anyone who purchases this place, including tons of new windows and beautiful original hardwood floors.
