This Artful Oak Lawn Heights “BIRD House” Rental Flew Off the Market — Literally

If you’re in the market for a rental home, you don’t need a little birdie to tell you: If you see a cool property, sign on the dotted line — pronto. Especially if it comes with its own custom, glow-in-the-dark silver bird sculpture built right into the architecture.
It’s just what you’d expect from Boss Coltrin Properties, owned and operated by renowned sculptor Brad Oldham and his business and life partner, Christi Coltrin. Like all of the couple’s homes, each has its own moniker — this one, affectionately, named the “BIRD House.”

Two weeks ago, prospective renters had a rare chance to lease this vintage luxury Cottage Tudor, the newest addition to the Boss Coltrin portfolio. But not for long. The day it hit the market, a chief technology officer relocating to Dallas snapped it up. Asking price: an above-market $4,000 a month.
“We should be higher because we’re different,” said Christi.
There’s a lot to love about this charming 1,391-square-foot abode.
For starters, its historic Oak Lawn Heights location — a hidden-gem neighborhood near the Medical District. Built in the 1940s and completely renovated last year, the home ranks a “10” on the curb appeal scale.
It also features a supremely stylish, two-story detached back house — a signature of every Boss Coltrin home. This one comes complete with a half-bath, AC, covered staircase, insulated windows, ethernet, and plenty of storage.

And of course, you’ll find Brad’s unmistakable artistry throughout. Along with the aforementioned silver bird — a variation on the winged figure that first appeared in Brad’s 2009 Deep Ellum Traveling Man installation — a laser-cut metal panel adorns the back window.
“Our idea was, when you walk up the stairs, it feels like you’re in a treehouse,” said Christi.

Other standout features include an outdoor parcel box, remote-controlled gated driveway, covered patio, and neatly manicured landscaping. In addition to maintaining the yard, Christi and Brad even plan to decorate the house for the holidays.
“This neighborhood goes all out for Halloween and Christmas, so in that spirit, we included putting up lights in the rent,” Christi added.

While there are no immediate plans for more rental properties, the pair — recently ranked number three in the nation for public art — are staying busy with a myriad of custom commissions. Clients range from the El Paso Fire Department to the Richardson Public Library.
“We think about how people live with art,” said Christi. “In public spaces, it meets people where they are. At home, it’s the same idea, just from a different angle — letting art become part of everyday life in a way that’s integrated and lasting.”
