Scott Beck: What’s Happening With the Former Valley View Midtown Development
Share News:

Wondering what’s been happening with the torn-down Valley View Center? It’s been a year and a half since an early morning fire there at Preston and 635 accelerated the developer Scott Beck’s timeline for demolition. Host April Towery sat down with Beck, the CEO of Beck Ventures, for an update and a better understanding of the property’s tumultuous development timeline.
Beck discusses the development of Dallas Midtown, which aims to create a walkable mixed-use neighborhood with high-rise buildings and additional tax base for the city. Beck explains the challenges faced during the demolition of the mall, including asbestos issues and homeless encampments. He also addresses the issue of affordable housing in the district and the importance of starting with market-rate apartments to drive density and retain population within the city.

Why not let any house build an apartment complex packing in the poor anywhere in the city?
Because it would devalue the homes around it and lower the tax base.
You know, there’s something about quality of life. If you study hard, invest in your business or college for years, generation after generation, why does the government have to take advantage of that and sell lots for masses of those families who chose not to have discipline? Is there no where in Dallas it will be safe to buy a nice home and have a neighborhood where many such families sacrificed You Tube time to instead become the highest producing members of society? Does the government have to take everything of value and cash it in so the city officials can sell influence and get rich off the backs of the peasants?
Why are so many articles in favor of tanking the quality of life? This area already has far too many apartments, jam packed along Montfort.
Do we really want to turn a nice area into a San Francisco, a poop city?
Scott Beck’s comments were absolutely pointless. The expectation was he would explain the 10 year delay in project and when if ever the massive eye sore would become a reality. Very disappointing.
I agree with Mary Louise Cadigan. Every business has obstacles. I didn’t need to hear about Becks. When will he invest in this and get it done???
If Beck had the capital to build, he would certainly try….. he’s stuck in neutral. AND he doesn’t control key parcels that are needed to create the synergy needed to make it all happen. He needs to raise the white flag & sell to someone that can make it happen & bring it all together. It should be easy to do. He just needs to give up & let someone with money take over.
Yes 100% BUT!!! Who wants to work with the City of Dallas? They have been putting up barricades over and over and cannot see that developing this 30 acres will bring in so much rev. Talk to the Adelsons! I got so much grief when I suggested this in my city council campaign…
Developers in N. Dallas very few if any low income or affordable units and most of them end up being built in Southern Dallas creating big areas of poverty, low income schools, nice jobs, stores and restaurants not wanting to open around them. Also a lot of crime like gun fire, shootings, robberies, theft. etc. around them. I know because I live in Southern Dallas around a whole lot of them. Why do we keep getting all the crap and N. Dallas doesn’t?
Scott doesn’t have the cred to finish this project. He blew it and missed the boat and now no one will play with him. This project is over his head. I do not understand why Candy keeps enabling him instead of being honest and tell him the truth! He needs to sell.
Hey if interest rates go down, that might just happen!
Still nothing
When Prestonwood Town Center mall was about closed in 2001 or 2002, it was already replaced by what is there now in 2006. We are now 12 years going on Valley View Mall since Beck has been involved. I know the city of Dallas is hard to deal with but this has been to long…
Interest rates are down. Cranes are all over downtown. Now what’s the new excuse? Here comes 2025.
Location , location, location
That’s the problem
I live in the neighborhood of that project, i have been hearing that BECK company will start this year and it has been 5 years they will start the project. I lost my hope of that development. Scot Beck has been coming up in news since 2018 but nothing happens. He needs to hand this project to someone who is capable of doing it.
I heard he is selling but not communicating with anyone. Terrible for Dallas. What a loss.
People talking about low income or affordable housing being brought into the area. Might I suggest you actually go to that area and see what housing is in that area and south of LBJ now? There already seems to be a plethora of this type of housing. Probably one reason banks won’t touch this right now.
