Home tour season is here, and it seems we have a beautiful neighborhood to explore every weekend. However, this Saturday is the corker with the much-loved Munger Place Wine Walk and Homes Tour.

Munger Place
5111 Worth

This charming house, built in 1917, has been restored to its former glory and updated with modern amenities. The restoration in 2000 added an expanded porch and a modern kitchen with floors from an old YMCA gym and a ceiling salvaged from a downtown Dallas building.

This handsome 1913 Craftsman-style home was built by Mr. and Mrs. E.T. Summers for their daughter Lone, and new husband Harry C. Bloomer, who were married here on November 4th, 1914. The wedding invitation is a proud piece of the home’s history and is still displayed today.

What could be better than touring gorgeous homes and popping the cork on a great bottle of wine?

This 1918 American Foursquare has much of its original downstairs footprint remaining. It is known as the Skielvig-Schoolfield-Little Flower Mission home because of its impressive list of former owners, including S.C. Skielvig, an architect who built courthouses in North Texas, and Benjamin Schoolfield, a respected orthopedist. The home also once served as the headquarters for the Little Flower Missionary Society, the oldest organization at Saint Thomas Aquinas Parish.

Munger Place is one of our most unique neighborhoods. It has one of the most extensive collections of Prairie-style homes in America and was the first deed-restricted neighborhood in Dallas.

In 1980, Munger Place was added to the National Register of Historic Places and was given Historic District status by the City of Dallas.

We devoted an entire column to this Spanish Mission Revival condo in the Munger Place historic neighborhood. It was originally built as an investment property in 1910 by entrepreneur T.A. Manning. Manning founded the largest insurance company in Texas, the Southwestern Fire and Casualty Co.

Elizabeth Mast is a Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty agent who owns the popular neighborhood shop Talulah & Hess. She has sponsored the Munger Place Wine Walk and Home Tour for years and is a presenting sponsor this year.

“It’s an intimate event,” Mast said. “It’s almost like you are going to a private progressive wine-tasting party at each house. You get to see great houses, taste great wine and have great conversations throughout the tour. The homeowners are usually in the house, so you get their perspective which adds to the fun.”

This 1920 diamond in the rough is in the process of being renovated back to its former glory. This is an extraordinary opportunity to see plans for a historic renovation.

These tours are so much fun. Especially after a few glasses of wine.
