Meadowbrook's Oldest House

Meadowbrook is still a bargain. The last time we looked in over one year ago the price per square foot was $140. Now it’s $170. Still, this Greek Revival treasure at 4500 Meadowbrook Drive, allegedly the oldest house in the historic hood with a build date of 1880, is a steal by any standard.

A Lesser-Known Gem

Meadowbrook is still something of a mixed bag, with dodgy pockets and less-than-wonderful multi-family units. Oakland Boulevard, the artery that conveys you to Meadowbrook Drive, is undeniably rough around the edges. But Meadowbrook Drive is one of Fort Worth‘s lesser-known gems, replete with one-of-a-kind charmers, many verging on grand, with large well-tended lawns.

The three-bedroom, three-bath, 2,240-square-foot villa on Meadowbrook‘s main drag underwent a spectacular and sensitive restoration in 2017 after decades of neglect. Hardwood floors, millwork, windows, and ceilings have been rejuvenated and look like they will steadfastly weather another century.

The color palette is refreshingly verdant. One of three original fixtures hangs from the paneled living room ceiling. The living room contains one of the two gas-burning fireplaces. Beams are a feature of many of the ceilings.

The floorpan is fairly open for a 142-year-old house. The ground floor essentially consists of three interconnected spaces comprised of a large parlor, dining room, and kitchen with an attached laundry room.

A Good Case of The Blues

The kitchen is one of the highlights of the residence with bows to history given a fresh take like the historic hex tile in the backsplash. Lower cabinets are painted a matching clean blue seafoam.

The blue seafoam is a leitmotif that runs throughout the house, reappearing in walls, kitchen, and bath tiles, and even the bedspread. The bath renovation manages to work in two freestanding sink cabinets and a large shower stall with a rainfall shower head and separate hand spray. Another second-floor bath has a vintage claw-foot tub.

One of the bedrooms has been turned into a combination game room, sitting room, and office with the second gas fireplace.

The house faces west, so the second-story balcony is a great place to unwind and take in the sunsets. The property has a separate covered garage for one car.

Noelle Slater with TDT Realtors has listed 4500 Meadowbrook Drive at $379,900.

I love this historic home, along with its appropriately selected and colorful (staged?) furnishings, and am delighted it was restored following decades of neglect. The provincial rather than academic columns add immeasurable charm. The verdant color scheme appears to have been motivated by the living room fireplace tiles. A distinctive individual or family will recognize the privilege of becoming this home’s new custodian.
