Texas Sellers Spend About 10 Years In Their Homes, New Report Says

Two Dallas ISD schools make a national list of best high schools, the 2019 Texas Homebuyers and Sellers Report​ is out, and we take a look at how the state housing market fared in March, all in this week’s roundup of real estate news.

Two Dallas ISD High Schools Ranked in Top 20 Nationally

The School of Science and Engineering (SEM) and the School for the Talented and Gifted (TAG) both made the top 20 in the most recent rankings of best high schools conducted by U.S. News & World Report. Both schools are located at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center, and were ranked 12th and 16th respectively.

This year, Texas led all states, with three schools in the top 20 — and two of them from Dallas ISD.

Additionally, in the top 20 schools in Texas, the district had five — SEM, TAG, Irma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School, Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, and Judge Barefoot Sanders Law Magnet were ranked 1,2, 6, 14, and 17, respectively.

“It speaks to the quality of the programming that we have and offer in Dallas ISD. We’re continuously researching the best way to implement learning initiatives,” said Tiffany Huitt, executive director of magnet schools in Dallas ISD and a former SEM principal. “You have a community of people working really hard who want the best for these students, and what you see is the result of that in the rankings every single year.”

Huitt said that even schools that did not make the top list have improved year-over-year.

“It’s not just academically, but programmatically, you can look across the rankings and see a number of schools, while they may not be in the top 20, they are improving in their rankings from the year prior,” said Huitt.

Texas Sellers Spend About 10 Years In Their Homes, New Report Says

The average Texas seller spends about 10 years in each home they buy, the new 2019 Texas Homebuyers and Sellers Report released by Texas Realtors revealed.

The report examines details about real estate consumers, including income, age, and perceptions of the housing market.

When it came to why homeowners opted to sell their homes, the desire to be closer to friends and family topped the list, at 22 percent, while 17 percent said job relocation was their reason for selling.

The median sales price was $70,000 more than what the seller originally paid for their home, shoring up other reports that Texas has some of the highest home equity in the country. Homes stayed on the market for about a month, and nearly a third of all buyers were first-time buyers, with a median age of 32. Overall, the median age of homebuyers in Texas was 47.

Most Texas homebuyers are married couples at 68 percent, followed by single females at 15 percent and single males at 9 percent.
