Yeah, over a patent infringement. Zillow claims it’s “Zestimates” are proprietary, and Trulia says real estate valuation is an idea that cannot be patented.
In an 18-page ruling issued Oct. 7, Judge James L. Robart of the federal court Western District in Washington state stayed the case pending a decision by the Patent and Trademark Appeal Board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The appeals board has been asked to consider Trulia’s claim that real estate valuation is a “covered business method” and thus can’t be patented.
I have no idea whether the Zestimates are proprietary, but I do know that in Dallas they are mostly just wrong. The case has produced more than 128,000 pages of Discovery. How very, very green!
Interesting …

And how very, very stupid. They both regurgitate MLS data pulled via IDX, spin it, and then sell it back as leads to the same agents they got it from. And some of us (never again) are actually dumb enough to buy it.
In the DFW area Zestimates are within 5% of sales price 21% of the time, within 10% of the sales price 43% of the time and within 20% of the sales price 76% of the time.
Thank you Bill! All those trees wasted for naught!
