The Home With the Messiest Title in Texas: Trial Underway for Man Who Tried to Swindle 4949 Swiss Ave from Dallas Woman

By Candy Evans / June 13, 2012 /

This dilapidated, once elegant mansion has been the focal point of poignant legal battles since the death of the owner, Mary Ellen Bendtsen, in 2005. Agents tell me it may have the messiest title in Texas. This week, legal justice may be coming. Three men, including two Dallas antique dealers who prosecutors claim conspired to take advantage of Bendtsen’s mental state and her kindness right at her deathbed, go to trial in Dallas County.

Yesterday was day one in court for Mark McCay, age 50, who is accused of attempted theft. Prosecutors say he weaseled power of attorney from 88-year-old Bendtsen after alienating her from her family, and persuaded her to leave the Swiss Ave. house to him and his partner. Bendtsen signed her will in her hospital bed at Baylor. The defense says no, McCay and “the boys” befriended and entertained Bendtsen ten years before her death.

D Mag Jumps on The Chicken Train With June Issue, But Misses Several Classy Coops

By Joanna England / June 12, 2012 /

Perhaps I’m biased because my flock wasn’t featured in the June 2012 D Magazine story by Michelle Saunders, but it feels like East Dallas was a little over-represented. There are plenty more avid chicken keepers in Oak Cliff, specifically in the little nook just north of Ledbetter called Hideaway Valley. That’s where you’ll find Michael Cook, who not only has a flock of heritage hens in his backyard, but keeps — get this — silkworms!

Coldwell Banker Analyzes The State of Residential Real Estate “By The Numbers,” And Finds People Looking For Homes in Texas

By Joanna England / June 12, 2012 /

Journalists are notorious for being bad with numbers. I won’t lie — I got a C in calculus and I was so proud of it. But that’s not to say I can’t appreciate data and statistics (I aced statistics, by the way!).

That’s why I love this idea from Coldwell Banker’s Blue Matter blog, which breaks down trends inside the homebuying process. This month, Coldwell Banker statistician Weiman Dong and COO Budge Husky take a gander at data for the month of May on the Coldwell Banker website and come up with some interesting results.

The Re-Launch of the Dallas Stoneleigh Residence Towers Gets a Rise from Realtors

By Candy Evans / June 8, 2012 /

While the rest of the city was getting drenched by Wednesday night storms, we sipped wine in the Dorothy Draper- designed Penthouse of the Stoneleigh Hotel, drooling over the boards and renderings of Dallas newest high rise condo, The Residences at The Stoneleigh, and honor The Rise School. To re-launch,  developer Mehrdad Moayedi hosted a reception…
