Dallas ISD Set to Welcome Youngest Harvey Evacuees: How You Can Help

Our readers are generous. I know this first hand because just last week, we asked you to come to the aid of our Dallas ISD teachers and students by funding their DonorsChoose campaigns.
And in less than a week, we have raised $12,636 in donations and fully funded 32 campaigns. You are all truly amazing.
But we’re going to put a pin in this project, and focus on something else — an even more immediate need.
Dallas ISD announced Tuesday that it expects to welcome evacuees from Hurricane Harvey to its schools. The students that are housed at the Dallas Convention Center will be provided transportation and enrolled in J.F. Kennedy Elementary, A.W. Spence Middle School, and North Dallas High School, depending on grade level.
“The district is now working to secure uniforms, backpacks, and school supplies for the students,” the district’s statement said.
And this is where our readers come in. The district needs donations of backpacks, school supplies, and new uniforms. A complete, constantly updated list can be found here. As of now, the district doesn’t know how many students will be enrolled but rest assured that any surplus will definitely go to deserving students.
If you’re interested in serving as a volunteer with Dallas ISD’s effort, you will need to register using the district’s volunteer application. If you would like to donate or volunteer, contact Usamah Rodgers, Assistant Superintendent of Strategic Initiatives and External Relations, at 972-925-5477, or email [email protected].
But we’re going to make it even easier. In addition to the Latino Center for Leadership Development, where Dallas ISD trustee Miguel Solis has been collecting since Tuesday, three more local businesses have agreed to become collection points this week.
