HEB ISD Lists 57 Acres in Bedford, Including Athletic Fields and Bark Park

One of Bedford’s largest remaining undeveloped properties is officially on the market after years of speculation about its future.
The owner, Hurst‑Euless‑Bedford Independent School District, purchased the property in 1969, and its potential sale has been a hot topic of discussion for several years. Now the Tarrant County school district has opened bidding on the 57.48‑acre tract near Harwood Road and Meadow Park Drive.
The district-owned land includes the Meadow Park Athletic Complex and the city-operated Bark Park. The 11-acre athletic complex contains baseball, softball and soccer fields, while the dog park occupies part of the same property.
Bedford Mayor Dan Cogan discussed the pending sale last month during his quarterly “Mornings with the Mayor” presentation at The Bedford Center YMCA. He said that residents have expressed interest in keeping the land as open space or have asked whether the city could purchase it. Cogan added that acquiring a tract of this size is not financially feasible for the city.
HEB ISD set the minimum bid at $14.25 million and is requiring a $100,000 cashier’s check from interested buyers. The bid window opened July 29, with a pre‑bid meeting scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the HEB ISD Administration Building Board Room, 1849 Central Dr. in Bedford. Bids must be submitted by 2 p.m. Aug. 26, according to the district’s official solicitation notice.
The land currently is zoned for single‑family residential use, but future development would require city review and approval for zoning changes, according to Bedford spokeswoman Molly Fox.
If previous data holds up, this property found within the 76021 ZIP Code could bode well for homebuilders. In 2024, it was listed as the fastest-selling ZIP code in the state.
The district’s decision to open bidding on the property comes as the district faces funding challenges and undertakes one of its largest capital efforts in years. Backed by a $565.7 million bond election package voters approved in 2023, HEB ISD currently is constructing full replacement campuses for L.D. Bell and Trinity high schools.
The acreage, one of the largest remaining open tracts in Bedford, sits within minutes of major highways and DFW International Airport, making it a potentially significant redevelopment opportunity for the region.
