This Highland Park Neoclassical Revival Is a Lesson in Transformation

It takes knowledge, experience, and talent to bring a historic home up to the standards of new construction. Seldom have I seen a more successful transformation than this stately Highland Park Neoclassical Revival mansion.

Briggs Architecture & Design and Caitlin Wilson Design collaborated in the renovation of this 1949 home. Of course, the premise of a historic home is that you’re working with something that has excellent bones and original character that cannot be matched. All that shows here.
With five children, Wilson understands, better than most, what it takes to create livable spaces that are beautiful and functional. Her design is also clearly influenced by living abroad in London, Hong Kong, and Dubai. Having spent time myself in both London and Hong Kong, I can say with confidence that you come away with an appreciation of fabric, color, and wallpaper you never knew was possible. So it was not surprising to me that Wilson launched her textile collection in 2011, which you can see showcased throughout this Highland Park Neoclassical Revival. Her use of pattern and color creates a timeless look that enhances the architecture of the home.

Additional square footage was added during the 2023-2024 renovation, bringing the home to 6,916 square feet with five bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms. A classic entry opens into the dining and bar area in a comforting deep green to one side and the formal living room on the other. Custom dentil molding from the formal rooms was recreated in the kitchen, and moldings and millwork throughout the home were enhanced with color.

The largest transformation in any remodel is often the kitchen, and this one is spectacular. The center island has elements of an elevated farmhouse table and adds warmth to the space, as does the glass-front built-in china cabinet. They provide just the right touches of charm. The kitchen features commercial-grade Blue Star, preferred by culinary enthusiasts.

The expectation of any backyard today is that it provides resort-style features. This Highland Park Neoclassical Revival does not disappoint. There is a beautiful pool, fenced for the safety of the smaller children in the family. A sports court is configured for pickleball and basketball, and of course, there are multiple areas for dining, entertaining, or just enjoying the day.

Set on a quiet, tree-lined block just off Armstrong Parkway, 4343 Rheims Place has been beautifully reimagined to provide a sophisticated yet inviting atmosphere.
