If I weren’t already deeply rooted in my neighborhood, I’d be the first in line to buy this Kessler Park English Tudor. It’s a treasure trove of everything I adore in a historic home: character, charm, original details, and an enchanting backyard.
An early advertisement offers great details:
“This beautiful home is plastered throughout with metal lath. The woodwork is magnolia finished in walnut. It has two beautiful baths and one shower. There are four sleeping rooms with southern exposures overlook[ing] the Stevens Park golf course, which gives you a view unsurpassed. Kessler Park, with its already built homes, affords you an environment worth while.”

Those of us who love historic homes will find this 2,669-square-foot three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath Kessler Park English Tudor to be a real gem, featuring original stained glass and leaded windows, as well as a beautifully preserved Batchelder fireplace.

It was challenging to find who designed the home so I hope one of our readers can provide information on the architect and builder. Of course, I dug into the archives of the Dallas Public Library’s newspaper collection, which is an invaluable resource for anyone researching their home or one they want to purchase.

This Kessler Park English Tudor was built in 1928, and the first owners were Mr. and Mrs. Ben New. Sadly, they were only here briefly. According to newspaper records, they unfortunately lost the house due to delinquent taxes. It was then sold to Mr. J.D. King in 1935. Leven and Lucille Deputy lived here for what appears to be over 20 years from the 1940s to the 1960s. Mr. Deputy was the mechanical superintendent of The Dallas Morning News and later became the production manager.
I was told that former journalist and Dallas mayor (2002-2007), Laura Miller, and her husband Steve also called this Kessler Park English Tudor home. Their children were born while she lived here, and I can just imagine how much fun it would have been to toddle around this home as a kiddo.

But, the most heartwarming chapter in this home’s story is the transformation it underwent with the current owners. They turned a once-overgrown yard into a stunning and thoughtful outdoor paradise, complete with a pool, terraces, and a grand outdoor kitchen and dining pavilion that perfectly complements the home’s charm. Those arches to the pool were constructed to represent the four seasons. In fact, you would never know that everything they created was not original. It’s that well done.

This is such a lovely historic home, with all the beautiful details and a gorgeous backyard to top it off. You’re getting not only a wonderful piece of architectural history, but also a home that has seen generations and stories unfold within its walls. Now it’s time for yours!
