Love It Or Leave it, Terri West Does Reno Her Way

One hundred years never looked so good, some will say. Purists will decry the modern liberties taken with this 1924, 2,000 square foot, three bedroom, two-and-one-half bath Craftsman cottage. Say what you will, this is not a callous and capricious renovation. It is nothing less than a complete architectural re-imagination of space and structure. We’ve followed with interest the career of Terri West for nearly 10 years and each project reflects increased confidence and imagination and this redesign at 2716 College Avenue is no exception.
And the adaptations are not as radical as they appear at first glance. The typical asymmetrical Craftsman façade is made harmonious by the covered porch supported by four evenly spaced, almost dainty, piers. Inside the original footprint is mostly respected with some opening and reallocation of space. The original hardwoods have been saved and refinished.

A major modernizing element are the refurbished windows and doors which brighten the interior. In the updated context, the century-old built-in bookcases and millwork look like designer-selected architectural antiques, deployed in a modern interior, gaining added emphasis and importance.

The main bow to modernity is the open-concept kitchen dining room enabling an expanded kitchen. It packs in a spacious island bar, gas range, built-in microwave, and refrigerator. Countertops are quartzite.

The top-to-bottom redesign naturally includes a top-notch bath with stunning modern fixtures with a two-sink vanity and deep shower stall.

A new large side patio with a storage area beneath has stairs leading down to a large two-car garage. And this remodel isn’t all spit and polish. Substantial investment has been made to the infrastructure including new utility and sewer lines and new HVAC system as well as a complete overhaul of the support beams and substructure and a new roof. Energy efficiency has been improved with foam insulation in and under the floor and exterior walls.

Lisa Mosier of League Real Estate is listing 2716 College Avenue for $735,000.
