Love Maximalism? A Bold New Hue’s Carissa Henderson Just Listed The Perfect Home For You

When you put your home on the market, the prevailing advice on staging is to declutter and depersonalize. You’re supposed to get rid of all the knick-knacks, paint neutrals on your walls, and take down the family photos. It’s popular advice because, in most cases, it’s warranted. However, in Carissa Henderson’s case, we’re glad she didn’t follow those rules.
A Master at Maximalism
Henderson, the designer behind A Bold New Hue, has gradually added color and personality to her Richardson home for the past eight years. Over that time, her home has become an incubator for her take on maximalism, which would make it a tragedy to beige-ify it. But does that mean it won’t find a buyer when it’s time to list?
“I always had expected that I would have to cover it up to sell it,” Carissa told CandysDirt.com. “However, after my house gained notoriety online and in publications, as well as building a following of people who love this decor style (and getting input from people in the area), we decided that there is a buyer out there that can appreciate the creativity and uniqueness of the home.”
While Carissa assumed that her Duck Creek 1976 custom home would get fewer bites because of its maximalist style, her Realtor (who also happens to be her mother-in-law) is sure it will go fast.
“If buyers are tired of the same old gray updates, this house is for them,” said Ebby Halliday Realtors‘ Kelli Henderson.

And yes, this home underwent many updates beyond the fabulous maximalist paint and wallpaper.
“There are several rooms that I truly adore, including the backyard fire pit area, but I think the upgrade that made the most impact on our lives is our primary bathroom,” Carissa said. “Our bathroom originally had a tub with a shower head, moldy slate tiles, awkward lighting, and a god-awful vanity.”

Carissa and her husband ended up gutting the bathroom to add an enormous floating vanity and a huge double shower.
“I literally take about three showers a day just to escape and sit in the space to help calm my brain while I work from home,” Carissa said. “I don’t know how I’m going to function without it.”

For Kelli, it’s more the details that she loves and thinks buyers will appreciate.
“I love the pink bookcase in the den,” Kelli said. “The breakfast nook is awesome. And the openness between the kitchen and living room is great for entertaining.”

We’re sure Carissa’s style is what is going to draw the right buyer in, but the neighborhood might be what seals the deal. It’s why Carissa and her husband fell in love with Duck Creek, which, to Carissa’s delight, has both ducks and a creek. A walking path that follows the creek and circles a nearby rec center is a favorite route for Carissa and her dogs. With a Starbucks around the corner, a fantastic Richardson ISD elementary school nearby, and all the shopping you need, it’s a tough neighborhood to leave.
“We would honestly stay in this neighborhood forever if we could,” Carissa said, “but I’m excited to see how it grows and the positive impacts the improvements will make on the value of the neighborhood.”

Of course, those who love maximalism are likely overjoyed to see Carissa’s bold design on the market, we’re excited to see what she does in her next home. Carissa and her family are moving to Pflugerville due to a job offer they couldn’t turn down.
“The new house is adorable though,” she said, “and is the perfect blank palette for me to recreate some maximalist magic and transform it into something totally unexpected!”
Ebby Halliday Realtors‘ agent Kelli Henderson has listed 1808 Villanova Dr. in Richardson for $469,000. See this maximalism masterpiece in person at the open houses from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, May 18 and 19.
