If you are longing for a lock-and-leave urban lifestyle, it doesn’t get better than this historic West End penthouse loft. Its character and proximity to every possible amenity put this two-story loft at the top of the list for city-living lovers!

I had to do a double take when I came across this West End penthouse loft, as it looks exactly like one I stayed in years ago in Amsterdam. It has the same gorgeous brick walls and exposed wood beams, and the European decor makes it look almost like a film set.

It’s exquisite.

A West End History: Saddles, Dick Van Dyke, and That Zapruder

Located in downtown Dallas’ West End historic district, 509 Elm Street was built in 1901 for the Tenison Brothers Saddle Company. They had originally been a block away and grew so rapidly that by the late 1800s, they needed a six-story building.

Remember, this area was considered the hottest spot for business in the early 1900s and remains so today. Check out our 2019 story for insight into how this building is also connected to not only the Dick Van Dyke TV show, but also Abraham Zapruder (yes, that Zapruder).

West End: Location, Location, Location

“Anything you can imagine is within walking distance,” David Griffin & Associates listing agent Randy Elms said.

“It’s a five-minute drive to the American Airlines Center, and if you don’t want to deal with traffic, it’s a 15-minute walk.”

Klyde Warren Park and The Perot Museum are both blocks away, and the Sixth Floor Museum is around the corner. The AT&T Discovery District and Neimans are both 15-minute walks.

You can even walk over to Union Station and hop on a train. If you want to catch some jazz at Reveler’s Hall, the Bishop Arts District trolley stop is a couple of blocks away. For anyone moving here from another large city who only uses the car for weekend jaunts, this is simply the perfect location.

Although the photos speak for themselves, there are some features I want to point out in this 2,586-square-foot, three-bedroom, three-bathroom West End loft.

  • There are over 20 windows, all with electric coverings.
  • The terrace wraps around and offers the most amazing views of the city. New Year’s Eve and Fourth of July will never be the same!
  • The property includes a refrigerator, washer, and dryer.
  • The entrance is on the side making it very private despite being in the heart of the city.

An urban environment, low maintenance, privacy, and history? Perfection!

Elms has 509 Elm, No. 603, listed for $650,000, and if you are looking for more space, you can combine it with No. 602 next door!

I’m intrigued, and slightly distracted, by those huge floor lamps in the main living area. And the shades on the overhead fixtures resemble hovering UFOs. I’m sure it’s an attempt at scale. Even so, this place is cool!
