People have always told me that I need to have a life goal. After meeting her this past September, I have discovered that when I grow up I want to be like Jan McFarlane

When Jan celebrated her birthday in September she threw herself a birthday bash that has to go down in the record books as one of the best. Jan rang in her 84th trip around this planet with lots of friends, lots of mixed drinks, and the one and only King of Rock N’ Roll himself, Elvis.

If that is not a life goal then I do not know what is.

How to Be a Legend

Held at John David’s diner Nova in Oak Cliff, the invitation said to “dress to impress in your ’50s best.” Jan did just that wearing a cool, black, studded leather jacket with fringes and her cowboy boots. The ultimate hostess, Jan greeted all of her guests with hugs, drink tickets, and the choice of studded Kitty Kat or Elvis glasses.

Much like Elvis, Jan is a legend only her specialty is in the mortgage industry. Jan is known as the go-to person for “forward” and “reverse” mortgages. While she let her real estate license go in 2005, Jan has always kept her mortgage license and loves working with agents to help their clients secure their financing.

Singing And Dancing With Elvis

That does not mean that Jan cannot keep up with Elvis though. A half-hour into the party, the King made an appearance and put on a show.

From singing “All Shook Up” to “It’s Now or Never” to “Don’t Be Cruel” Elvis did not disappoint. And it was not just her guests that got to enjoy the live show, everyone in the diner got to experience a little bit of Elvis.

But that is the way Jan is — never selfish and always willing to have fun. More importantly, Jan is always willing to invite you to have fun right along with her.

So when people talk about having a life goal and how to reach them, it cannot hurt to take a chapter out of Jan’s book. Yes, fame and fortune may be great but what is the point if you cannot share it with good friends, smart cocktails, and Elvis?
