Need More Room? Moving From Dallas to a Larger Apartment Will Cost You

In a recent study, RENTCafé churned the numbers, using a proprietary formula to calculate the cost of upsizing an apartment to an extra bedroom.

Maybe that apartment kitchen table isn’t cutting it for the home office. Maybe the cat strolls over the keyboard during a key part of a Zoom call.

You need room to make work-from-home work.

In a recent study, RENTCafé churned the numbers, using a proprietary formula to calculate the cost of upsizing an apartment to an extra bedroom, regardless of the apartment size that a renter is renting from. RENTCafé’s study found that 35 percent of renters want to upsize their apartments whether for home-office space or just more room for the family.

According to RENTCafé, apartment-dwellers in Dallas would have to pay an extra $296, or $3,552 a year, for another bedroom. That’s still less than the national average of $330 per month.

Moving would be another option. Going from Dallas to another city in the Dallas/Fort Worth market is an additional cost proposition, but it could be worth it if it means a reprieve from commuting.

RENTCafé’s found two options where it’s cheaper to upgrade apartment size. Moving to Lancaster for an extra bedroom means you’d pay $99 less on monthly rent, saving $1,188 a year. Mesquite also would be a savings. Moving to a larger apartment in Mesquite would be $44 cheaper than the current monthly Dallas rent.

Moving to Fort Worth would cost an additional $157 each month. As you’d expect, moving to Frisco from Dallas is going to be costly, an additional $588 more each month and $7,056 more yearly.

Moving to Frisco isn’t Manhattan costly. To move to a larger New York City apartment, it’ll cost you 43 percent more each month.

RENTCafé’s report contains data collected from a survey of 20,149 respondents between May 21-31 on rentcafe.com. RENTCafé presumed the survey respondents to be predominantly apartment-seekers. As part of its study, RENTCafé also developed a calculator to see how much it costs to upgrade to another city.
