HELP! This Estate Sale is Filled With Art, Antiques, And Beatles Memorabilia

At 3730 Holland Avenue, there’s a small, eight-unit complex tucked between Oak Lawn Avenue and Turtle Creek. Unlike today’s cookie-cutter buildings, no two units in this building are the same – but they are large. Unit 2B is a 3,146-square-foot unit with three bedrooms plus three and one-half bathrooms. Before popping back on the market, the unit will host an estate sale by Rusty Hunt of The Jewel Box in Snider Plaza this weekend.

The complex was built in 1973 by architect Harvey Ritchie who formed the units around a central atrium. When I toured the home with Dave Perry Miller agent Sharon Quist, I noted there were a lot of skylights. Spying from Google Earth, you can see a roof pockmarked with skylights to bring additional light through the units.

The home is filled with an eclectic mix of antiques and such. Above you can see the ubiquitous china service younger generations don’t use, but I definitely like that tall clock. Unlike every other grandfather clock you’ve seen, this one is different. At first, I thought it was Art Nouveau but it’s something else.

Of the bronze sculptures on sale, this one is my favorite. Something about the determined toil of pulling a fishing net from the sea appeals to me (who’s never hauled a fishing net from the sea in his life).

Across from that bronze is this standing chest flanking one side of the fireplace in the oversized living room. I like the technique of mixing old and new pieces in a space.

See what I mean about the living room being large? This pic was taken standing in front of that standing chest. Yes, the baby grand piano and carpets are for sale too. In the back-center of the picture is a wetbar and kitchen. The slash of red is the rounded dining room with a rounded window looking over Holland Avenue (as does the whole living room).

Another interesting piece that struck me was this vase. I can’t decide if it’s Native American or Asian. The clothing looks almost Asian but the trees (cactus?) and background look more American southwest. The coloring is a lot more impressive than my feeble picture-taking shows.

That red dining room offers a great space and the opportunity to stock up on candelabra or another bronze sculpture in the background.

Upstairs there’s an impressive burled wood queen bed. I think a bright set of linens would refresh the whole look.

If you need a king bed, there’s this four-poster in the master. As you can tell from this picture, it’s a really large master bedroom. To the left of that tree is a fireplace, one of two in the unit.

The master bathroom is very spacious with a lot of closet space. In the distance you can make out the master bedroom’s patio – there are many patios in this place. A large one on the ground floor and others on each floor.

Knowing my CandysDirt.com readers, I saved the best for last. How about this for a corkscrew? It’s professional-grade and (obviously) brass.

There will be plenty more to see during the estate sale this weekend when it’s supposed to be a lot warmer and perfect for a walk over.  It’s open Friday & Saturday 10-4 and Sunday 1-4.

If while poking around you think it could feel like home after some renovation, unit 2B will be back on the market next week for $649,000.
