Paintings From the Mercantile Building Among Treasures in This Prestonshire Estate Sale

Stephen F. Austin, William B. Travis, and Sam Houston all greet you at the door of this Preston Hollow estate sale, taking place this weekend.

Former Dallas Mayor and Mercantile National Bank founder R. L. Thornton commissioned the noted portraitist Emil Hermann (1871-1966) to paint these oils on canvas to hang in the original First Mercantile National Bank building in downtown Dallas. The Dayton, Ohio artist moved to Wichita Falls, first lured by the hope of portrait commissions from individuals striking it rich in the nearby Burkburnett Oil Field.

After the bank closed and the building sat abandoned for years, these paintings found their way to this late estate owner, Mr. Daniel Millet of the family-owned Millet the Printer in downtown Dallas. A similar portrait by Emil Hermann, an oil on canvas of General MacArthur sold at Heritage Auctions for $1,792.50 in 2007.
