can you imagine time it takes to work with clinker brick?

Have you ever driven past a home and had to do a quick double-take because of the brick? I bet you didn’t know that there are almost a dozen different sizes of brick.  The times I have to stop and take a closer look are when the home appears to be bricked in a random pattern with a total hodgepodge of brick sizes and colors … with even some lava rock mixed in.  Those homes are built with clinker brick.

What is Clinker Brick?

Clinker brick, sometimes referred to as “old world brick.” It is a material that is rarely seen on homes these days.  They are created when wet bricks are basically burned during the heating process and become shiny, misshapen, blackened or sometimes split.

Notice clinker brick pattern and colors are very random. Ivy makes a nice visual too

Not many homes are built using clinker brick these days.  The bricks are more expensive, it costs more to lay the bricks — while it looks random and discombobulated it is quite detailed and intricate — and it takes just the right style of home to look exact.

The Tudor-style home at 200 Crestwood Drive is a perfect example of clinker brick exterior. The 1945-built home is quite mesmerizing looking at the home with the different sizes and shapes of the bricks as they work together to give this home just the right charm and mystery of a fairytale home.

Venetian Plaster

Upon entering this home you will notice that the walls are not your typical textured walls.  To the touch they are smooth and cool — indicating that they are Venetian plaster walls.

Venetian plaster on walls and ceilings of entry, dining, and living room gives the home a special shimmer.

Venetian plaster is plaster mixed with marble dust, and then applied to the surface in painstakingly thin, multiple layers. The surface is later burnished to create a smooth surface with the illusion of depth and texture.

However you make it happen, if you’ve seen Venetian plaster walls and ceilings, you know that it is very elegant and makes a room spring to life with shimmer and shine.  (Just make 100% sure you are putting wall hangings where you want them for a long time because there’s no Venetian plaster spackle if you make a mistake.)

The Rest of 200 Crestwood Drive

The rest of this 3,416-square-foot, two-story home features four-or-five bedrooms (one is currently a study), four-and-one-half bathrooms, three living areas and a formal dining room. The family room is a wonderful area off the kitchen with a ton of windows and natural light. Being in the Crestwood neighborhood, you can see plenty of mature trees from the windows.

The family room has elevated ceilings and abundant natural light
