A loud noise reminiscent of a car wreck awoke Judy and Charlie Brooks about 4 a.m. Friday. Checking around, they were shocked to see their mighty red oak tree — perhaps uprooted by the weight of ice — had crashed into their backyard garage.

Judy and Charlie live on Perryton Drive across from Kiest Park. They are leaders of the Kiest Park Community Group and have been leading an effort to restore two groves of trees there.

They also participated in the recent city-sponsored planting of 150 trees in the park.

“Guess the Arbor Day plantings at Kiest Park offset our loss of a tree,” Judy wrote in an email this morning. A few of the new trees are still leaning over, she wrote, offering “hope they might recover.”

Talk about life’s give and take. Talk about optimism.
