Spanish Eclectic

When I spotted this Highland Park Modern Spanish Eclectic mansion I was, as they say in Britain, completely besotted. Although that’s a word generally used about people, we feel pretty deeply about the homes we write about at CandysDirt.com. So it’s not unusual for us to be utterly infatuated with a property like this gorgeous home at 3656 Stratford Avenue.

Entering this house is like stepping into one of the Santa Barbara Spanish Eclectics that have defined that area architecturally. Dallas has embraced this style since legendary architect Clifford Hutsell began building Spanish Eclectic homes in the 1920s. Since then we’ve seen the influence of Spanish Revival in practically every neighborhood in the city. Getting it right is another story. There are countless suburban examples of what I call “Mediterranean gone mad” that are truly awful. However, our Monday Morning Millionaire is a perfect example of the right way to design and build a modern Spanish Eclectic.

Modern Mediterranean

Why is a good interior designer important when selling a house? Look back at images from 50 years ago of any home created by interior design icons like Billy Baldwin, Albert Hadley, or David Hicks, and you’ll realize you could live there today. Good designers create a look that will stand the test of time. Dallas has just such a designer in Jan Showers, and she is responsible for the comfort, quality, and class of this modern Mediterranean at 25 Glen Abbey Drive. (more…)

One of the best-known names in the Dallas interior design community is Jan Showers. Her aesthetic of “glamour without pretense,” as Veranda magazine dubbed it, is sumptuous and refined, an impeccable marriage of elegance and function.

During regular trips to London, New York, Paris, and Venice, she scouts genteel antiques for her showroom in the Dallas Design District. These show up in her designs alongside pieces from her own luxury line, the Jan Showers Collection. The resulting spaces are sophisticated and dazzling, yet imminently livable and comfortable.

“I get bored with everything in a room or house being of the same period or style,” Showers said. “It is so simple to mix periods and styles—that is what my look and the antiques and vintage pieces in my showroom reflect. It comes very naturally to me.”

As New York fashion designer Michael Kors writes in the foreword of her first book, Glamorous Rooms (now in its eighth printing), “Design like Jan’s fuses great taste and an expert eye with the reality of life as it is actually lived. That’s why people are always so astonished at her glamorous touch—because it’s built into designs that are functional and comfortable and fun.”

Jan Showers __Glamorous Retreats__Let’s face it: if you live in Dallas and have not heard of Jan Showers, you are not awake. Today (still) is Oct. 1, the day Dallas interior designer (and glam glam Turtle Creek resident) Jan Showers releases her second book, Glamorous Retreats. It was inspired by her vast work in the interior design industry, and is a mate to her first book, Glamorous Rooms.

What I especially love is that this book is loaded with photos of never-been-published second, third, and even fourth homes of clients. There are twelve vacation homes and retreat homes from all over the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean: Nantucket, Harbor Island, Palm Beach, even Becky and Steve Meyer’s ski retreat home in Bachelor Gulch, Colorado.

With more than 200 hundred never-before-seen photographs, Glamorous Retreats showcases the renowned designer’s elegant eclecticism, which blends Hollywood high style, mid-century modernism, and classic 18th century French styles.  Each home transports its owners, as well as the reader, to a vision of tasteful yet accessible glamour – all set against the backdrop of stunning resort destinations.

Talk about House Porn — this is Room Porn! It is also so refreshing to see second homes so very well put together. I know what I may be buying for holiday gifts this year — Glamorous Retreats!Jan Showers __Glamorous Retreats__.png1
