On Thursday, Nov. 15, members of the Dallas Pacesetters – a select group of 30 Dallas-area Realtors from various brokerages – gathered over boxed lunches at 3504 Marquette Street in University Park to listen to nationally acclaimed local architect, Richard Drummond Davis. Davis, who trained at Princeton University under renowned post-modernist Michael Graves, spoke on “Trends and Residential Design.” Though he has a reputation for authentic period architecture, his early career focused on eclectic designs, blending classical forms with contemporary use of space.

One such example of an eclectic Davis project was, not coincidentally, the meeting site on Marquette, which is also a current listing of Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate agents and Pacesetters, Paige and Curt Elliott. Davis explained the thought process behind the 1984 home’s 5,184-square-foot “meandering” floor plan. Conversations can be had across multiple rooms, including from the lofted game room down to the main living/dining space.

“We consciously tried to make it flow from room to room,” said Davis. “The open plan was intended to be that way. Back then, everyone in Dallas was still doing discrete rooms in houses and pretty much doing only American Colonial architecture, classical Georgian and Greek Revival architecture.”

In that respect, the four-bedroom, five-bath home somewhat defied the norms of the time.

Sometimes total luck is involved when searching for our Inwood House of the Week. When this 1953 Preston Royal Midcentury Modern popped up on Realtor.com, practically in Candy’s backyard, I had one of those OMG moments. I just knew there was a big story behind this home, and I was right.

This Preston Royal Midcentury Modern at 11339 Royalshire Dr. was your simple one-story Leave It to Beaver home when Leslie Ezelle decided to put her HGTV Design Star All Star touch to it. Ezelle is a Dallas treasure. She is a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader, a rock star interior designer, owner of Leslie Christine Designs, and she competed on season six of HGTV’s Design Stars. She was such a fan favorite that HGTV invited her back to be on the  HGTV Design Star All Star competition, and of course, she became the first All Star winner.

North DallasNow that Amy and Jim “Sevy” Severson’s children have left the nest, the two have set their sights on a Gulf Coast vacation home and a smaller abode in Dallas. That decision is going to mean great things for a new family, since they’ve listed the North Dallas home they built in 2001.

If the Severson name sounds familiar, it’s because the two have owned Sevy’s Grill, the restaurant named after Jim, since 1997.

That four-bedroom, three-bath home at 6550 Dykes Way is built for a family — literally. The Seversons bought the property and lived in the existing home from 1991.

“We bought our property in 1991 when the street was all original and you could walk into the Downs of Hillcrest from our end of the street,” Amy said. “It was all working class ranch houses, 1400-1600 square feet tucked into a ‘hidden’ north Dallas neighborhood bookended by newer, walled neighborhoods on Hillcrest and Preston.”

But the original home became a squeeze for the family of four, eventually.

“We loved our little city sanctuary, almost half acre at the end of a street, but we outgrew the original home by 2000,” Amy said. “We hired architects Bernbaum & Magadini — Bruce and Cindy Bernbaum were friends via Kramer Elementary. Our builder was Howard Gorman of Gorman Homes.”

That home, built with growing kids in mind, sits on a nearly half-acre lot on a quiet cul-de-sac. The layout is family friendly, with its open kitchen and den that provide views of not only playing children during dinner prep, but gorgeous views of the big backyard and pool. (more…)

“Every single flip is extraordinary and they pay incredible attention to detail, like moving the wall back six inches to put in a full-size refrigerator and giving homebuyers a big binder with every single manual and thing they’ve done, from a light fixture to a garage door opener,” Murphy said. “There’s not something comparable on the market in Oak Cliff that is in this price range.”

Ebby Halliday Foundation Honors Legacy of Dallas Philanthropist, Real Estate Leader | CandysDirt.com

Ebby Halliday Acers was wildly successful in real estate, opening the doors to successful careers for thousands of people. She was also widely admired for her passionate leadership and tireless altruism throughout her life.

This Texas legend is being honored with a namesake foundation that will continue her incredible philanthropic work across North Texas. The Ebby Halliday Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, supports charitable and educational activities that serve women and children in need in the greater North Texas region. Ebby passed away in 2015 at age 104.

“That’s what Ebby did during her lifetime — she helped people and helped organizations [so this foundation will] continue doing that,” said Ron Burgert, chief financial officer of the Ebby Halliday Companies and a founding member of the board of directors of the Ebby Halliday Foundation. “I knew Ebby all my life and she would absolutely be smiling about this and wanting us to carry on after she is gone.”

Among the many tributes to Ebby’s philanthropic legacy in North Texas are Juliette Fowler Communities’ The Ebby House, an innovative transitional community for young women who have experienced foster care or have been abandoned, displaced or abused; the WiNG’s Center at Ebby’s Place, which helps lift economically challenged working women out of poverty; and the Ebby Halliday Library at Happy Hill Farm in Granbury, a 500-acre farm that is home to North Central Texas Academy, an independent college-preparatory day, boarding and international school which seeks out underserved students. And in 2011, she was honored with the new building and naming of the Ebby Halliday Elementary School in Southeast Dallas.
