Bonton Farms Ushers in New Year With Wellness Center, Affordable Apartments

Bonton Farms is one of the most underreported success stories in Dallas and yet they keep doing their thing — employing the formerly incarcerated, providing fresh food on an urban farm, offering social services, and housing those who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford a roof over their heads.
The latest projects in Bonton are what community leaders are calling a “trifecta”: the Bonton Wellness Center, Bonton Gardens housing project, and the Bexar Resource Center.
“For the last 200 years, racial injustice and systemic oppression prevented opportunities in Bonton that were a given elsewhere,” according to the Bonton Farms website. “The people here experienced higher rates of diabetes, stroke, and cancer, and 48% of residents lived in poverty. Residents have been denied access to the seven human essentials that are necessary to survive and thrive — health and wellness, economic stability, safe and affordable housing, transportation, a sense of belonging, education, and access to fair credit. Today, the community is transforming, and healing is coming from within.”
The Trifecta
Here’s what went down at the Dec. 12 Trifecta event.
Officials broke ground on Bonton Gardens, a 36-unit apartment complex to create safe, affordable housing. Construction is underway on the first of two buildings. Also under construction is the Bexar Resource Center, a collocation space for mental health services and social service providers. It’s a meeting space for apprentices and retail space for “Bontonpreneurs,” officials said in a social media post.
Finally, supporters, donors, staff, and community members cut the ribbon and officially opened Bonton Wellness Center, an 11,000-square-foot facility that will provide primary care needs, host educational sessions, provide dental care, and host nutrition, fitness, and financial health classes.

“The buildings are just the beginning; the programs, the people, and the partners filling the space are where we believe true transformation happens,” Bonton Farms officials wrote on social media. “We invite you to continue to be part of the journey as we develop and grow the resources and programming that will support the heart of Bonton Farms, our community neighbors and residents.”
