Details Make the Design in This Highland Park Luxury Home

This Highland Park luxury home seemed familiar, so I started digging through our archives. Indeed, I wrote about it in 2023. However, it’s even more stunning now with new staging by George Bass Stage & Design and new photos. It definitely warrants a revisit now that it is back on the market.

What continues to set this home apart from so many others is the fact that it was built by Ventura Custom Homes as a spec. I love a spec home because the builders are not bound by a client’s budget or taste. It’s essentially a portfolio piece that showcases the very best of what a company can do, and Ventura’s owners, Loy and Shideh Lowary, always design and build something next level.

As the legendary designer Charles Eames said, “The details are not the details. They make the design.” And the details start outside before you even enter the front door, where a marble fountain sets the tone. This is actually a nod to history. It was common for ornamental fountains to be placed in courtyard entries as the focal point of stately homes in Europe. They let you know you were in for something special then, just as this home does now.

The formal living room’s transformation into a lounge exemplifies the new look — an intimate space adaptable for daytime games or evening cocktails, anchored by Alan Knight’s statement lighting, for a plush yet relaxed ambiance.

The staging by George Bass Stage & Design is what truly made me do a double-take on this home.

“It’s our job to enhance the architectural details and features of the house,” Bass said. “This home is the new classic look to me. It lends itself to modern contemporary attitudes, but at the same time, it has unique features that separate it from other luxury homes. We came in thinking, what are people expecting when they see a home like this? What do they want? It’s uniquely placed and located at a sought-after address, but what is the lifestyle here? Today, many modern houses can look and feel the same, so we have to distinguish between them. I’m influenced by an international look. I collect from over 80 vendors, including private sales and one-of-a-kind creations that are made for me by local talent. I don’t copy, I’m influenced, and we implement international ideas in properties like this to make them feel appropriate to the lifestyle.”

Bass and his team knocked it out of the park yet again.

We’re seeing warmer kitchens finally, and this one features Taupe Tay and Cerused Gray Elm wood cabinets from the Wood Gallery, sourced from their partners in Italy. The countertops are Brazilian Critallo Quartzite.

Before the home was finished, it was purchased, and the buyer added a catering kitchen. It is not just utilitarian, it’s also gorgeous and logically placed. Catering staff can enter from the side entry on Lomo Alto Drive and never have to go through the main part of the home.

The principal suite sets a new standard for luxury with a closet created by Douglas Paul Designs that features two refrigerators. You may be thinking, of course, I need a glass of wine while I dress for a night out, and that is absolutely correct. But think again. While you are sipping your champagne from the dual-controlled fridge that keeps that bubbly at the right temperature, your skincare products are also chilling out at the perfect temperature in the BeautiFridge.

An elevator will take you to all levels of this 8,074-square-foot Highland Park luxury home, including the top floor’s state-of-the-art media room.

The Highland Park luxury home lifestyle continues outside, where the corner lot features a pool, fire pit, built-in outdoor heaters and speakers, synthetic turf yard, and a three-car garage with direct access off Lomo Alto.
