Epic Spiral Slide, Hidden Cinema, What More Could You Want?

Some emails stop me in my tracks. That was the case Saturday when a photo of an epic spiral slide popped up. Why’s that, you ask? Because the slide is INSIDE the house.

While interior slides may not be novel, they are rare at the luxury price point. Notably, Sky House in New York City has an 80-foot interior slide and just sold for $20 million, while London’s Rainbow House features a four-story slide connecting the master bedroom to the kitchen. Now a luxury rental, the latter lists for nearly $4,700 a week.

5343 Bonita Ave. in Dallas

Of course, this indoor slide at 5343 Bonita Ave. is not the first in Dallas. Mark Molthan built one for billionaire Thomas Dundon that Candy wrote about in 2011. In 2016, Williams Trew Realtor Seth Fowler famously slid down one in Fort Worth’s Montserrat for us!

My question is, why doesn’t everyone have a slide? It makes perfect sense to me. But an epic spiral slide is not the only cool thing you are going to find in this contemporary custom home. There is a second hidden entrance to the first-floor media room. It’s accessed through a bookcase in the office, which opens as a door into the media room.

And what a media room, because there is yet another hidden feature. A king-sized bed slides out of an enormous drawer because who does not want to watch a big screen in total comfort? Think about the sleepovers! Your kids are going to go bonkers over this. In the daytime, this room doubles as a playroom once you open up the blackout screen that reveals a window behind the media seating. It’s also essentially an extra guest room, so a win-win all around.

You can access the media room from the soundproof sliding doors in the living room, but it’s so much more fun to use the secret entrances!

Owners Jose and Noreen Cabrera built this home in 2015. “Both of us are quite immature,” Noreen joked. “One of our dreams was to have a house with a slide. So, when we decided to build, we centered the design on the slide. Working with AIA Award-winning architect Jonathan Delcambre, they created what is probably the most entertaining house for kids and adults alike. It was not the easiest of feats because getting the custom bright red slide in the house and into position was out of the builder’s comfort zone.

“We had to organize it ourselves,” Noreen said. “It arrived from Houston on a semi, and we got eight of our CrossFit friends to carry it in through the back alley and get it upright. We had to be super careful not to chip it. Our eight friends held it upright as Jose bolted it down.” Now that’s dedication to the cause!

The epic spiral slide is far from a funky architectural element. The Cabreras and their two kids use the slide all the time. “We slide down, especially after soccer games. When you have a PJs onesie on, it’s great,” Noreen said. “The kids love it when they have birthday parties, it’s the entertainment!”

In fact, the entire 3,600-square-foot home screams kid-friendly to me because it has soaring ceilings, loads of light, and polished concrete floors, which you can clean with a leaf blower (I know from experience). Of course, it also shouts “this is the perfect home for an art collector” with those museum finish walls.

But wait, there’s more. The chef’s kitchen features an oversized waterfall island, quartz surfaces, and premium appliances, a backsplash to match the epic spiral slide, and, you guessed it, something hidden. That would be the oversized pantry with endless storage that flows into a mudroom.

Last but not least, this home of the epic spiral slide has another must-have: guest quarters above the garage with a private gated entrance off the alley. It’s complete with a living room, kitchen, and bedroom. As I always say, renting out guest quarters for the short or long term is a brilliant way to offset your mortgage.

Now for the location. You cannot beat it because it’s just off Lower Greenville, close to great restaurants, shops, and, of course, Trader Joe’s.

What more could you ask for? A terrific contemporary home with an epic spiral slide, hidden features, and a guest house. Slide right in and call it home! And if you want a terrific lease, the property is also available for $12,000 per month.

Dave Perry-Miller Lakewood’s Cat McCarthy can get you sliding into this fantastic property at 5343 Bonita Ave. for only $1.899 million.
