Corgan’s ‘BOOKWORM’ Turns Reading Into Play at Dallas CASA’s Parade of Playhouses

Some playhouses are about climbing. Some are about pretending. And then there are the ones that quietly invite kids to slow down, curl up, and let their imaginations take the lead.
That’s exactly the idea behind “BOOKWORM,” Corgan’s 2026 entry for Dallas CASA’s Parade of Playhouses, built by Austin Commercial. The design turns the simple act of reading into architecture that children can touch, explore, and make their own.
At first glance, the playhouse looks like two oversized books gently leaning together. Look closer, and the concept unfolds — literally. Pages become structure. The front cover is about to open up. And inside, a cozy reading nook invites children to sit, read, organize their treasures, or even stand on a curved platform to read aloud to an audience.

The inspiration came directly from how people interact with books, said Carlos Romo, a project specialist at Corgan and this year’s playhouse designer.
“We open books, flip through books, stack books, and read books,” Romo said. “Those ideas informed how the building form would take shape.”
Rather than leaning into an abstract architectural statement, the team intentionally kept the idea literal because kids connect best with things they already understand. A book is familiar. A reading nook is inviting. And together, they create something instantly approachable.

The result is a space that works in multiple ways: a quiet corner for reading, open shelving for toys or books, and a playful platform that lets children engage not just with the structure, but with the people around them.
While the form feels whimsical, the materials are refreshingly straightforward. The structure is built primarily from two-by-fours, two-by-sixes, and plywood, a deliberate choice that allowed the design team to focus creativity on shape rather than ornamentation.
“The challenge was the curve of the book,” Romo said. “That curved wooden form gives the playhouse its personality, creating a strong visual identity, defining the entrance, and giving the structure a sense of movement.”

One of the most charming details? The “pages” of the book were created by using evenly spaced two-by-fours. They allow light and visibility to pass through the playhouse while still offering a sense of privacy — much like how a story is hidden within the pages of a book.
Bringing BOOKWORM to life is Austin Commercial, one of the largest and most diversified builders in the United States. Headquartered in Dallas, Austin Commercial provides construction management, design, and general contracting services across markets that include aviation, healthcare, education, hospitality, corporate, and public assembly projects.
Known for its strong safety culture, innovation, and relationship-driven approach, Austin Commercial’s involvement in community projects like Parade of Playhouses reflects a longstanding commitment to giving back in meaningful, hands-on ways. The company has partnered with Dallas CASA and leading design firms in past parades, helping transform imaginative concepts into beautifully built realities that delight families and support a critical mission. BOOKWORM is its eighth collaboration with Corgan.

For Romo, this year’s Parade of Playhouses is especially meaningful. It’s his first time participating.
“I’ve seen the houses every year at NorthPark and always wanted to be involved,” he said. “So as soon as the opportunity presented itself, I couldn’t help but say yes.”
That enthusiasm shows. BOOKWORM feels joyful without being loud, playful without being chaotic, and thoughtful in a way that lingers — much like a favorite childhood book.
And that’s the magic of Parade of Playhouses. These aren’t just structures. They’re invitations to imagine, to play, and to support Dallas CASA’s work advocating for children who have experienced abuse or neglect.
If you find yourself wandering NorthPark Center during the Parade of Playhouses, keep an eye out for BOOKWORM. You may just feel like pulling up a seat, opening a book, and remembering how powerful a good story can be.
Parade of Playhouses runs from May 22 to June 7 at NorthPark Center. Playhouses are available to win by raffle, with tickets on sale online at dallascasa.org or in person at NorthPark. All proceeds from the event support the children served by Dallas CASA.
