When we wrote about this 1959 JanMar Midcentury Modern Ranch five years ago, we never imagined its potential. But Jessa and Alex Stevens did.

They’d been living in Philadelphia and moved to Dallas when the pandemic began. If you remember, the real estate market was crazy then. Jessa flew down with a couple of houses on her radar, but by the time she landed, they were gone.

“This house popped up on a Friday, I saw it on Saturday, and we had an offer on it by Monday. There were other offers, but the sellers chose us,” Jessa said.

“We wanted to bring the midcentury style back to those parts of the house,” Jessa said. 

The Stevens hired Ghost Architects to help recreate the midcentury style throughout the house and in the guest quarters over the garage, which also has a workout space and an office for Alex. 

“We brought the look of the cabinetry in the dining area into the kitchen and reconfigured the dining and kitchen areas to flow with a vaulted ceiling.” Bathrooms were updated in a manner that is both a tribute to the era and thoroughly modern. Even the laundry room was given a midcentury makeover!

“My favorite part of the house has always been the living area,” Jessa said. “ At night, I love pulling in and seeing the house lit up. It feels so warm and cozy. It’s also the best house for hosting parties.

Midcentury architecture has always been about that seamless blend of indoor and outdoor spaces. The Stevens put as much thought into their landscaping as they did into their home. They had the pool refinished and redid the tile, added a new filter system, and new plumbing. Then they hired Hen and Chix to ensure the landscape reflected the home’s style and was kid-friendly.

“Our kids are now 10, 8, and 5 and have loved the house and the pool,” Jessa said. “This is such an amazing family and hosting house. We had planned to be here a long time, but my husband’s company changed its plans to move to Dallas. So, he was traveling back and forth to Philadelphia, and his schedule was just too much.
