Shoppers who frequent The Plaza at Preston Center are going to notice a lot of scaffolding over the next year or so as the iconic retail space gets a facelift.

Roughly $5 million in renovations are getting started this year, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the shopping center, according to a press release.

Enhancements to the property on the southeast corner of Preston Road and Northwest Highway in University Park will include an across-the-board color scheme revamp with matching trellises and brick pavers.

Venture Commercial Real Estate, LLC currently manages The Plaza at Preston Center’s 182,000 square feet of boutique retail and dining.

Company partner Amanda Throckmorton Welles shared some details about the renovations with CandysDirt.com.

“The primary paint color is a cool white with a hint of gray, and the secondary is a muted gray with subtle blue undertones,” she said. “We will be implementing darker charcoal brick throughout the planter areas along with new sconce to match the facade.”

Current roof caps will also go in lieu of new ones that better resemble the existing facades of Muchacho and il Bracco restaurants. Welles said the field colors will be Navajo White and Urban Bronze.

The updates are expected to take about a year to complete, with construction being carried out in phases so as to cause minimal disruption to visitors. Be on the lookout for “parking adjustments,” though.

Dallas-based architecture and interior design studio Droese Raney will be providing architectural services for the renovations.

The firm’s previous work includes Park House in Highland Park Village, Jóse on Lovers, and The Good E block redevelopment in Deep Ellum.

New Look Also Comes With New Tenants

In addition to celebrating the shopping center’s 75th anniversary, Welles boasted a number of new tenants and an occupancy rate of over 90%.

Welles said the property’s tenants fared pretty well throughout the turmoil of the COVID-19 pandemic, which wreaked havoc on brick-and-mortar operations across the country.

“Many of our long-term tenants at The Plaza have had their best years post-COVID, and we continue to see growth in sales. We have said goodbye to a few tenants over the past year due to leases expiring, but we are excited by our current and future opportunities to bring new and exciting concepts to The Plaza that will continue to enhance the tenant mix,” she said.

New tenants coming to The Plaza in 2025 include a French bistro concept called Frenchie, two fashion boutiques (Y-OHR and Trina Turk), and Viva Day Spa.

“We look forward to ringing in a milestone year with our longtime and slate of new tenants,” Welles said, noting that anniversary events will be announced in late spring and throughout the year. “We’re excited to celebrate with the University Park and Preston Hollow communities The Plaza has been a staple of since 1950.”

For now, anyone planning on visiting The Plaza this weekend who might need a new Canadian suit can check out Pockets, which is hosting a “Samuelsohn Anti-Tariff Trunk Show” on Friday and Saturday.
