A Love Affair with White Houses: Why These 5 Fab Homes Are My Favorite

Painted white brick with a flag waving over the front porch is as cute as it gets.

I do love a white house.

Oh, I am well aware that white houses are on trend right now. Either I was ahead of the trend or I just know what I like, on trend or not. My grandparents in Tulsa, where I grew up, had a beautiful brick house painted white. I always thought it was a great look, but didn’t realize until later how much I loved it.

In Oklahoma City, we lived across the street from the cutest white house with a red front door and bright blue shutters. I always thought someday I would copy that look, and when I moved to Texas, my second house here was white, and yes, with a red front door and blue shutters.

So now Mr. Cargo Pants (that’s my husband) and I live in our fourth Texas house. It took me a few years to convince him that our Old Chicago brick was not how I was meant to live. Sherwin Williams’ alabaster now covers the offending brick. The shutters are black, matching the door, because that’s what they were when I was trying to convince myself that I could be okay with the previous mottled brick. I am thinking about the black door’s next reincarnation…stay tuned. That door could be red at any moment, and then the shutters could go royal blue, too.

That’s the history of my love affair with white houses. I’ve written about a few because they just jump off the screen, attracting all sorts of attention. So, for 2024, here are some of the houses I’ve loved from the outside in…

Weatherford Flag Waver

All that white painted brick is a magnet drawing attention to this 1936 house in Parker County. So are the front porch, the window boxes, the green lawn, and, of course, the American flag signaling this is an all-American beauty.

The inside of this Weatherford traditional matches the obvious curb appeal from the outside. The sellers poured money into this house because it was meant to be their forever home, but plans changed. The home, designed by Fort Worth architect Earl Glasgow, has been modernized.

The house’s 3,213 square feet have been reimagined for modern life, and it includes two living rooms, an office, three bedrooms and three bathrooms. Yes, it’s been remodeled with new kitchen appliances and bathroom facelifts, but the original cast iron tub remains.

Sigh. I love, love, love this one.

Oakhurst Boho Chic

A blush pink front door and sage green shutters give this white house a surge of boho chic.

Talk about hip and groovy, this white house on historic Oakhurst’s Bluebonnet Drive reflects the boho chic vibe of its seller, interior decorator Brittany Cobb. Cobb is the CEO and founder of Flea Style, a local chain of five popular North Texas stores selling women’s clothing, accessories, and hats.

She updated this 1940 bungalow in her unique style, and graced it with her signature look, starting with the pink front door that opens into a very cool interior. Wallpaper, updated light fixtures, a cozy fireplace, and remodeled bathrooms all combine for a funky vibe in this 1,867-square-foot house. Its four bedrooms and two bathrooms make it very livable, but the front porch with its rocking chairs makes it very loveable.

White Priced Right

White paint refreshes this North Dallas ranch, and the blue door helps, too.

Now anyone who’s paying any attention to decorating trends knows that blue and white is hot, hot, hot. This North Dallas ranch starts that trend right at the front door.

Located in Dallas’ popular Highland Meadows neighborhood, it’s painted white like I like it. My guess is I wouldn’t have liked the brick underneath the white paint, so that’s a good start.

Then there’s a bright blue front door to just add to the greatness of it all. Walk through that front door for a view of a renovated home with French doors opening to the swimming pool.

New floors, fresh paint, stainless steel appliances, breakfast bar, bright vibe — and the price was right. It was listed at a budget-friendly $499,000. Move in, put the furniture down, and add some blue and white décor. Life is good.

Westover Hills White

Westover Hills, a swanky neighborhood no matter the brick color, does include this home that has received a white makeover.

In Tarrant County, having a Westover Hills abode is pretty swanky. Having a beautiful traditional home atop one of the rolling hills there is outstandingly posh. The five-bedroom home was updated both outside and in. Fort Worth designer Emily Gilbert, proprietor of Fort Worth’s Emily Gilbert Designs, reimagined the home’s facade, which included the paint, among other updates.

A kitchen makeover, fabulous wallpaper, a putting green, and a swimming pool are all part of the package, but it’s the address that ties a big bow on it. What remained was the house’s great location in Westover Hills. Fort Worth surrounds it, but Westover Hills actually is its own tony town. The stately homes, gentle hills, and lovely trees make it a nice place to live…especially if the house is white.

Bright Steps

Every step to the front door of this house gets closer to the white paint of this house featuring striking black accents. The house’s black-and-white combo is all the rage right now, and this 1988 Westover Hills estate has it going on.

The owners, Sarah McNutt and Ben Gillens, brought personality with their creative designs. The white-and-black color scheme continues inside the home, beginning with the foyer’s sweeping black staircase and gleaming floors. The couple transformed the house with a creative elegance…big steps in a white direction.
