A Hollywood Heights Storybook Tudor With a Rare Feature
Share News:

Hollywood Heights is one of the most charming neighborhoods in Dallas. Although there are splendid Spanish Eclectic homes and two fabulous Pueblos, it’s best known for having one of the largest, most intact collections of stone-embellished Tudor cottages in America. This Storybook Tudor is one of the finest examples in the neighborhood, and it has something we rarely see here.

In 1931, the contractor took advantage of the topography and built this Storybook Tudor on top of a gentle hill. That positioning allowed for a large basement with a separate driveway, a rare feature in Hollywood Heights. A 1963 Dallas Morning News advertisement notes the home has an “unusual boat space,” which makes sense considering the White Rock Lake Boathouse is less than three miles from the house.
This historic home features original stained glass and one of the most unique beamed ceilings in the living room. Many of the home’s original light fixtures have been restored and it’s clear that it has been lovingly cared for through the decades and had appropriate kitchen and bathroom updates.

One of the former owners, J.T. Patton, who lived here from the time the home was built until it went up for sale in 1963, was actually related to Mark Twain. The things you can find out about people and their houses!

While we see resistance just down the road in Lakewood to protecting historic homes, that’s not the case in Hollywood Heights. In 1989, the neighbors realized the value of keeping historic architecture intact and worked to have Hollywood Heights become the sixth conservation district in Dallas. This is why you can still enjoy life in a house that looks like it came out of a storybook, and it’s not next door to a big white box.
The craftsmanship and detail in these historic homes simply cannot be recreated today. Many skills have not been passed down, and the materials cannot be replicated or are now cost-prohibitive. Check out the cost of vintage Rookwood tile on eBay. You’ll be in for quite a shock.

Compass Realtor Natalie Hatchett has this Storybook Tudor at 7018 Hammond Ave. available for $785,000. Just imagine what you can do with that basement!
