A $750,000 Grant From NexBank Will Fund 6 Dallas Habitat For Humanity Homes

Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity is bouncing back from a rough 2023, announcing last week the award of a $750,000 grant that will fund the construction of six homes over the next three years. 

The news comes just a couple of months after a Dallas Morning News investigation revealed that the local Habitat affiliate — once one of the top producers in the country — was struggling in its mission to provide new homes to low-income families. 

New president and CEO Ashley Brundage, known for her fundraising abilities and community connections, took the reins in May and appears to have turned things around. 

NexBank, the largest privately held bank based in Texas, and its philanthropic arm, NexPoint Philanthropies Dallas, partnered with Dallas Area Habitat “to address the need for sustainable and affordable housing in the community,” according to a press release issued last week.

The $750,000 affordable housing grant will cover the construction of two new single-family homes each year for the next three years, the press release states. NexBank employees also have committed to volunteering on the Habitat construction projects. 

The three- to four-bedroom homes will be built throughout Dallas County and the future homeowners will qualify through Dallas Habitat’s homeowner requirements. 

“Dallas Habitat is dedicated to reshaping Dallas through the profound impact of affordable homeownership,” Brundage said. “By forging powerful public-private partnerships with NexBank and NexPoint, we are not just addressing poverty — we are dismantling it and driving a transformative change in our community.” 

NexBank has financed approximately $18.8 million in new affordable homes for Habitat over the course of their partnership, which began in 2017. 

Sharon Lahr, chief compliance officer of NexBank, serves on the Dallas Habitat board and chairs its mortgage company, Dallas Neighborhood Homes. 

“Our partnership continues to grow each year and we support the Dallas Habitat team in other ways including lending to help boost local affordable housing efforts,” Lahr said. “NexBank believes every individual and family deserves access to affordable housing, and we are committed to providing the support needed to make a difference.”
