We all know when we find a house that whispers to us, “You’re home.” That was what Gracie McCrary and her husband Gerardo Ortiz experienced when they walked in the front door of this charming Kessler Highlands cottage.

“I’d been in New York for a decade and was wondering where I’d find my fit,” McCrary said. “When we drove into the neighborhood, it felt special. It’s hilly, with a beautiful park and it’s diverse. People were speaking Spanish, there were ‘Black Lives Matter’ signs in yards, and I felt like I’d found the neighborhood that fit us. When we walked into the house, we looked at each other and said, ‘This is it.'”

Built in 1926, this quaint Kessler Highlands cottage is now 1,525 square feet and has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The original charm has been retained with built-in bookcases in the living room, a beautifully detailed fireplace, and original stucco troweling on the walls.

“Although it’s a smaller house, it feels open and airy,” McCrary said. “The living room is my favorite place. I love the 12-foot vaulted ceilings and detail around the fireplace. I grew up with a fireplace and knew I had to have one. We’ve had great game nights here!”

The home was extensively updated before McCrary and Ortiz moved in. It has much more than just gorgeous designer touches. It has a new roof, new electrical, and new HVAC.

Remember, looks can be deceiving. From the outside, you would never expect to find an enormous primary suite added to the back of the home. It features a contemporary en-suite bath with marble floors, countertops, a walk-in shower, and a large closet.

The secondary bedrooms are equally impressive with an attached Jack-and-Jill bath. Wait until you see the Murphy bed!

To top it off this Kessler Highlands cottage is perfectly situated on a corner lot, within walking distance to Kidd Springs Park, with its terrific aquatic and recreational facilities.

Of course, it’s just down from what is now the TyPo District (Tyler Polk), full of cute shops, great coffee spots, and excellent restaurants.

This was definitely the “IT” house for McCrary and Ortiz, and they thought about adding on, but with an expanding family, the thought of construction was a bit daunting. However, the property offers ample space for potential expansion as there is a massive backyard. A larger house was only four streets away, so don’t be surprised if you run into McCrary and Ortiz at the park or grabbing a coffee at Hola Cafe.

Hewitt & Saucedo listing agent Jeremy Moore has this adorable Kessler Highlands cottage at 801 Thomasson Drive listed for $650,00, and you can get a sneak peek today and tomorrow!
