Don’t try this at home.

You could probably find a lot of helpful columns with titles like “5 Helpful Plumbing Hacks You Can Try At Home.” And we do try to be helpful and informative at Upon Closer Inspection. But let’s be real, the content you come here for is the crazy, wackadoodle stuff people do at their homes that we find during home inspections. This week’s edition is devoted to plumbing hackjobs, you should never, ever try at home.

Is That a Balloon?

During the video report, Inspector Tracy said he pointed out that the stopper under the sink was secured by a balloon, and the client laughed and said, “That’s not a balloon.” Despite receiving the Macgyver Award for ingenuity in plumbing, that stopper still needs to be fixed properly.

Leaving Things Undone

Do you hear a little sarcasm, perhaps a little frustration, in Inspector Brian’s voice in this video? That’s because finding unfinished projects like this in flip houses is a pretty common occurrence. Whether contractors get up against a deadline and are in a hurry so they aren’t being thorough, or they’re using less qualified workers and not going behind them and checking their work – we see things like this a lot. If you’re buying a house that you know has had recent renovations or has been flipped, make sure you have a thorough home inspection.

Nice Ramp, But …

At least they noticed the plumbing cleanout was there? But this is how the plumber accesses the hard-to-get-to pipes, and they have made that access point hard to get to. Especially in an emergency. If you’re building a ramp, playhouse, or other structure in your yard, avoid building near the plumbing cleanout.
