Going Rogue: This Lochwood Listing Designed by Architect Donald Speck Was a Sci-Fi Movie Set

Architect Donald Speck designed only a few homes in Dallas. The one he’s most known for is also the most visible.

The pagoda-like structure on Van Dyke — an Old Lake Highlands street off of Peavy Road that has a bluff-like view of White Rock Lake — was featured in last year’s White Rock Home Tour.

However, while his work hails from the early 1960s, Speck’s style speaks to today’s buyers. With sloped ceilings, exposed beams that run from outside to the inside of the home, and open floor plans that lend to great entertaining, Speck’s design sensibilities translate well in renovations.

Interestingly enough, Donald Speck’s personal residence located in Lochwood also translated well to the small screen.

This 1967 made-for-TV film was filmed in part at David Speck’s personal home at 11737 Rogue Way in Lochwood.

“In 1967 it was featured in the sci-fi movie Zontar: The Thing from Venus,” says listing agent and designer Miranda Parker, who reimagined Donald Speck’s Lochwood residence into the updated beauty you see today.

In Parker’s hands, this 1961-built three-bedroom, two-bathroom Midcentury Modern in Lochwood is an absolute stunner. Parker’s use of color and texture throughout the Lochwood home’s 2,226 square feet would make Donald Speck proud.

“Aside from the panoramic windows, I love the orange feature wall in the center of the home, made from three-dimensional 1960s cinderblock,” Parker said. “But, the bold tile designs are a close second.”

The tile in the bathrooms and kitchen echo that three-dimensional cinderblock on the staircase, which connects this split-level home’s living and dining areas. With beautiful cabinetry, stylish brass-accented fixtures and appliances, and open-ended connection to the rest of the home, the kitchen is exceptionally well done.

The exposed stone walls, modern metal and wire railings, and the breeze-block fence are all swoon-worthy details that kick the aesthetic up a notch. Being able to see from end to end of this incredible home makes it feel like you’re living outdoors from the comfort of your living room.

Speaking of the open floor plan and panoramic views, this particular Lochwood location benefits from being next to the Lippitt Branch, which has a protected greenbelt.

“The highlights of this home are the two creek-facing balconies off the living room and kitchen,” Parker said. “Surrounded by trees and the sound of birds, the balconies provide a peaceful escape within Dallas city limits.”

Experience the views during Parker’s open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 4.

Miranda Parker with BK Real Estate has listed the Donald Speck-designed Midcentury Modern at 11737 Rogue Way for $996,000.

Thank you for saving my Father-in-Law’s house. The children all have great memories from their time there. We missed the open house on the 4th. Will there be another?
