Where Did Forward Dallas Go Off the Rails? [Podcast]

Share News:

You might say that Forward Dallas, the City of Dallas’s comprehensive land use plan, has fallen victim to a curse of bad timing. When a controversial — yet hypothetical — zoning idea overlapped a news cycle with the city’s comprehensive Forward Dallas plan, it seems the issues got conflated, says Andrea Gilles, the interim Director of Planning and Urban Design.

Gilles sat down with CandysDirt.com Dallas City Hall Editor April Towery for an episode of the Dallas Dirt podcast last week to discuss Forward Dallas in depth. In this short clip, Towery asks Gilles where or how the message for this city document update went off the rails.

The five-signature memo that Gilles refers to here is City Council Member Chad West’s memo asking to discuss how Austin, another Texas city facing growth and lack of housing, is considering changes to their zoning code.

well I did not learn very much from listening intently to this podcast…but what I did hear is that they do not advocate for any land use guides to be single use – ie they are not supporting single family districts any longer. That is the issue that people are concerned about – the Minimum lot size reduction recommendation – they continue to side step this issue calling it just a ‘conversation”.
What does that mean? They say it is not Zoning it is Land use, what is the difference? still confused!

The same confusion is present when they tell us that we aren’t talking about rezoning or zoning changes, but rather, it’s all just a “vision.” Isn’t the end goal of a vision to actually realize it? Makes no sense!
