Hello, post-holiday turkeys! Today let’s head to Hollywood Heights. It’s the cutest neighborhood. It’s in the Lakewood area, near great stuff, and has literally everything going for it.
This area has awesome neighbors that throw the best events, custom homes with varied architecture, tons of Tudors, Spanish Colonials, a few cottages, and this one and only Moderne. Built in 1949, you might call it a Midcentury Modern, but according to the survey, it’s MODERNE. Spelled just like that, too. Let’s all say it together – MOD-ERRRNE.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s dig into this adorably efficient home. It’s on a creek lot and the owner LOVES it. She’s been there 10 years, bought it from the original owner, and did her research. If the William Bell that formerly lived at 7138 Vivian Avenue is the same William Bell the owner believes him to be, he was a World War II veteran stationed on the Lexington submarine and his claim to fame is when the sub went down – like unintentionally – he saved the log.
Ahoy, Shower!
The reason she firmly believes that Bill Bell is this Bill Bell is the hint of nautical living you can find throughout the home. Hidden by a shower curtain in the photos, there’s an entire aquarium mosaic in the bathroom. There’s also a hook right next to the shower — it’s lower than a towel hook or bathrobe hook – and feels really “shippy” — like the owner was accustomed to a bunk.
Speaking of tight quarters, in the bathroom there’s a window seat the length of a twin bed and when relatives would come to town, that’s where Mr. Bell slept. (His relatives passed this tidbit along with the deed of the house over a decade ago.) All that to say, it’s an impressive window seat.
The current owner loves all the trees on the lot and the fact that the home still gets a lot of sun. Like tons of sun. She wouldn’t have it any other way.
Art Deco’d Out
As far as interior details, there are so many Art Deco originals that remain. Such as the bathroom mirror with the sleek side lights and the built-in shelves in the kitchen that serve as a divider into the living room. Then there are the original details like all the tile, storage above the shower and kitchen cabinets, and that slide-in range. Ugh. So freaking cute. If you find one cuter, call me.
