The Quirky Little House That Could, Now With a New Look

We’ve posted about this one before and I know what you’re thinking, CandysDirt.com, why are you double dippin’? But, it’s been reimagined…like walls moved and rooms added. All those fabulously quirky Turkish vibes are still intact and a little refined.

When Kate Murphy first heard about the funky little house on Carnes, she was like maybeeeee. But then when it was mentioned a second time, she was like alright, alright, I’ll check it out. Well, you know how this one goes. She fell in love. It was unusual and unlike anything she’d seen. (The previous owners loved Turkey and raised ceilings, arched doorways, and used materials they found on their travels for the finish out.) And here’s the other thing. Murphy is an interior architect by trade. Yep. That Kate Murphy. The one that designed Billy Can Can, The Porch, and Sixty Vines.

A New Layout

She was super into the little house perched on top of a hill in Oak Cliff because it had great energy and she loves a challenge. The style isn’t her typical style – one look at her portfolio and you pretty much pick up on that instantly – plus it was originally a three-bedroom, two-bathroom home that had been converted into a two-bedroom, one-bathroom home.

She had goals of bringing back that third bedroom and full bathroom and then she raised herself a half bath. She wanted to match the vibe of the house, too, but also add a little of her own clean, modern aesthetic, which is an overused and kind of gross word, but, hey, at least I didn’t say “bespoke.”

Murphy found a travertine tile that matched the one in the Primary bathroom at ReStore. She’s not above hunting just about anywhere for materials. She scours Facebook Marketplace, Tile Shop and her suppliers.

New, Old Bathrooms

Can I just say the new bathrooms are KILLER? They’re warm with natural woods, a bit of a rustic, old world feel (to match the house – DING) and yet, they have totally modern tile, sinks and faucets. She’s a real dreamweaver, that Murphy.

She updated the tech as well and then indulged her latest passion – and most recent business venture – landscape design. Murphy said again, her work is typically very streamlined and skews neoclassical, but for this home, wild and a little carefree felt like a better fit.
