Candys Dirt: How did you end up in real estate?

Joey Stanbery: I was a youth pastor for ten years. I grew up in the church, and at 19, I took over the youth group. By the time I was 21, a pastor friend in Rockwall had asked for my help. Then I went to a church in Mesquite in 2014.

CD: Do you think the skills you learned in ministry were helpful in real estate?

JS:  Absolutely. I feel like it prepared me for real estate. You have to have people skills, and ministry certainly gives you those.

CD: When and why did you move from ministry to real estate?

Joey, Faith 9, Haisley, 2 and Ashlie

JS:  We had adopted a child after nine years of marriage, then my wife got pregnant after 15 years of marriage. In addition to ministry, I worked in distribution for a sanitizing company and got furloughed. I was making ends meet working with DoorDash and knew I had to decide on the future. My brother had always told me I’d be great at real estate. I passed my real estate test in 2019 and hit the ground running. I had my first deal in a few months.

CD: What prompted you to move to DFW RE/MAX Associates Frisco Starwood?

JS:  I had a vision of having a team. I like encouraging people, and RE/MAX DFW Associates seemed like the right fit.

CD: You’ve been in real estate for about two years full-time and have already built a team!

Alicia Underwood

JS: That was always my vision. Alicia Underwood had been waiting in the wings when I made the move and was the first TBR Property Group team member.

CD: And it’s just moved at warp speed since then?

Robbie Shelton
Charles Bryant
Taran McKenzie

JS:  Yes! I sold a house to Robbie Shelton. He was so intrigued by the process that he got his license in July of last year. He joined us in January. Then I was discussing real estate at my daughter’s soccer games with Charles Bryant. He had been in real estate. He got out of the profession when I entered it but decided to come back and be on the team. That was about three months ago. Our most recent addition is Taran McKenzie. When he was a teenager, I was his youth pastor, and I officiated his wedding a few years ago.

A road trip with the family is always Joey Stanbery’s happy place.

CD: What’s next?

JS:  Our team prides itself in helping others, so we will be rolling out a program where a percentage of everything we close goes to a charity our client chooses.

CD: It sounds like you’ve found your fit!

JS:  I love real estate and helping people. Years ago, I watched a cartoon with my daughter about a boy who invented a robot to help people. The robot said,“ See a need, fill a need.” It resonated with me, and I’ve lived life and conducted business with that mindset.
