Meet The Midcentury Masters Behind The Eclectic Den

If you’re in the market for midcentury furniture and home goods or a killer rattan piece, there’s an Instagram account you’re going to want to follow – @theeclecticden. It’s run by husband-and-wife duo Harold and Darcy Segura, and their story is just as fascinating as their finds.

They set up shop in 2016, but in the smallest, most unintentional way. It all started with kids. They have three total, but it was the two little ones that were on the move and made Darcy realize it might be time to swap out their period pieces for a few more kid-friendly ones.

She listed their items on Craigslist and they sold quickly. Not surprising since they have great taste. The surprising part was people wanted more. They loved the Seguras’ style and that’s when this couple knew they might be on to something.

“I’ve always been a thrifter,” said Darcy, so she started collecting and storing the pieces she’d find on her thrift store and estate sale runs.

In addition to having a great eye, Darcy also had a secret weapon, she was married to him. “When I met Harold, he’d already built his own dining room table,” said Darcy. “He’s a natural woodworker.” With Harold by her side, Darcy was able to pick up imperfect pieces and have Harold restore them to their former glory.

Once they had a storage unit full of furniture ready for new homes, the two headed to Lula B’s to rent a space. Small snag — Lula B’s was at capacity.

“Someone told us about Instagram and we decided to check it out,” Darcy explained. That’s when Eclectic Den really came to be.

With minimal effort, they amassed quite a following and nowadays, if you see something you like, you better snatch it up because things go quickly.

“If someone says they’re interested in a piece, we’ll hold it for them so they can come take a look and make the decision in person,” said Darcy. But aside from that step, this entire business operates on social media.

They have a warehouse now and since things sell so quickly, they don’t hold open hours often. “We just don’t have the inventory,” Darcy said. But new items are added all the time.

What really sets them apart, aside from Darcy’s sense of style and Harold’s serious skills, is the fact that every piece they post is affordable. That was a big deal for Darcy — she wanted to make her finds accessible to everyone.

As for her style, she obviously loves midcentury, but said there’s always some ’80s rattan and wicker in the mix.

“I grew up on an island – Guam – so that style reminds me of home.” She added that they’ve really lucked out, “We only sell what we love and we’re fortunate that’s what’s in style right now.”

In addition to running their business, they’re living their dream. Darcy said they’re basically a mom-and-pop shop, and that’s exactly what they want to be. They spend time with their kids and comb the Metroplex for great pieces. What more could you want?

As for their success, Darcy said they both come from retail backgrounds, believe in quality and aside from that, “we’re just winging it.”
