From Leah Shafer: I love writing our Tuesday Two Hundred because of the challenge. As our North Texas market continues to heat up, finding a great house or condo in this price range week — one that not only offers good value but also wows — has gotten more exciting over the past three years I’ve been writing it. My favorite from 2017 was this Beckley Club Estates beauty from August 29. Read on an see why I was enchanted.
Bishop Arts is an “it” destination of North Oak Cliff, but prices there have increased hugely in recent years. Head southeast a short jog and you’re in the much more affordable and super charmed neighborhood of Beckley Club Estates. Here, you’ll find lots of bungalow- and cottage-style homes built from the 1930s to 1950s.
Our Tuesday Two Hundred at 1630 Ramsey Ave. is a 1951 beauty taken to the studs for a whole-house reimagination. The extensive updates focus on smart technologies and creating a sense of spaciousness in its three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and 1,891 square feet. The home feels as through its new, but its in an established, character-filled, and fast-appreciating neighborhood. Best of all worlds.
Developer S.A. Temple built Beckley Club Estates in the 1920s. With its location just two miles from downtown, it was an easy sell, what with the “thousands of native trees and shrubs…oak, elm, hackberry, cedar, ash, black haw, wild plum, etc.,” as one 1926 ad read. It was and is picturesque. Beckley Club is bounded by Crestwood and South Shore drives, and Beckley and Ramsey avenues.
The curb appeal is thoroughly modern, with concrete squares for a walkway and contemporary green front door. Green features include low-E windows, 12-inch attic insulation, 16+ SEER AC, high efficiency water heater, and a radiant barrier. Other “behind-the-scenes” updates include new electrical wiring and new plumbing pipes throughout.
Inside, the owner has completely opened up the floorplan of the common areas, added recessed lights, hardwood floors, and a retro-contemporary chandelier over the kitchen island, which is navy blue. That space is fab, with butcher block and quartz countertops, live-edge wood shelves, white subway tile backsplash, white cabinets, and stainless steel appliances.
Love both renovated bathrooms, especially the master with its modern soaker tub, walk-in closet, black-and-white veined granite, and dual sinks. That bedroom is great, too, with hardwoods, recessed lights, and lots of natural light.
In back, there’s a new 10-by-20 deck with solar accent lights. The yard will soon have a have Zen garden, board-on-board privacy fence, and a creek view with mature bamboo along the water.
