The 41st annual Lakewood Home Tour is almost here, and we’re giving away tickets! Read on to find out how to win!

Next weekend, six beautiful homes will be featured as part of the Lakewood Home Tour, and we have a sneak peek into one of them — a gorgeous modernized Lakewood Tudor at 6708 Lakewood Boulevard.

“My husband calls this the ‘Mullet House,’ ” owner Julia Buthman said. “It’s all business up front and a party in the back!”

Buthman and her husband Kenneth Hirsch purchased their 1927 Tudor last year. When they moved to Texas a few years ago, they were told by friends to look in Lakewood, but their GPS navigation system took them to Fair Park. So, they ended up in the Park Cities for four years.

“Once we discovered Lakewood, we joined The Lakewood Country Club because we like the neighborhood vibe,” Buthman said. “My husband and I would stand on the second tee of the Lakewood golf course, laugh, and say if one of these houses ever goes up for sale we each had carte blanche on buying if one of us was out of town. My husband mentioned this story to Maggie Terilli who was a newly minted Realtor at the time. Of course, she finds a house and my husband texts me when I’m out of town!”

Hirsch waited until Buthman got back and they saw the house on a Saturday.  Although they didn’t buy that particular home, they did discover this house, saw it on Sunday, and purchased it on Monday.

“We were not really in the market for a house, but when we saw it, we knew it was so much more in keeping with what our combined family needs.

This classic traditional Lakewood Tudor was part of the initial development of Country Club Estates. It was taken down to the studs, completely remodeled, and enlarged to 4,834 square feet in 2011 by W2 Studio. The renovation honored the history and character of the house. Original floors, glass door knobs, and vents from the 1920s were kept.

“I love that the floors were not redone,” Buthman said. “You can see the path where people have walked from the front door to the kitchen.”

With four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a powder bath, there’s plenty of room when everyone descends for family gatherings and holidays.
Lakewood Home TourWhen it came to adding a personal touch to the home, the couple called in Vickie Crew Interiors. Paint colors were extremely important. “We travel a lot and see colors we like at hotels,” Buthman said. “Ken will call the hotel maintenance departments and get the paint formula, and we’ll try out a new color. We have no shame in repainting rooms until we get it right. We painted the dining room four times.”Lakewood Home Tour

Although the house had been renovated, the backyard was untouched. The prior owners had several dogs, so it was a blank slate with a concrete patio. The couple hired Steve K. Swenson to do some California-style landscaping. Saltillo tile was added to create character and warmth, and plans for a fountain are in the works.

“We inherited a 60-foot flagpole in front of the house,” Buthman said. I’d never have thought about putting one up, but now that we have one, we’ll never take it down. We have fun with it and put up game day flags from our universities.

The couple inherited something else with the home. “Two dishes that are original to the house have been passed down from owner to owner,” Buthman said. “There is an inscription on the back that says ‘original to the house.’ ”

The Lakewood Home Tour is November 11-12. You can find all of the other homes, as well as tickets to purchase, here.

The fourth time was assuredly the charm for the dining room blue, as it complements all of the room’s features. The bedroom color combinations are lively, and the Saltillo patio with glazed tiled-risers provides Southwestern contrast. The remodeled Hirsch-Buthman home is clearly a keeper!
