They say location sells a house, and that’s certainly true. But for families, schools often come in a close second. Our Thursday Three Hundred offers a big selling feature in addition to its cute-as-a-button looks and great neighborhood: it is in the attendance zone for Hexter Elementary, a beloved institution in the area.

Located at 609 Brookhurst Dr., this updated home is near North Bucker Boulevard and Peavy Road in East Dallas’ Lake Highlands area. Renovations create an elegant feel in its 1,502 square feet, built in 1955 and updated to feel current and stylish. It has three bedrooms, two bedrooms, swimming pool, and covered patio.

There’s an open house this Sunday, June 11, from 2-5 p.m. How about a sneak peek?

The drive-up appeal is undeniable, with a new professional paint job on the exterior. Love that blue door and the stone chimney.

The fresh paint extends indoors, too, which is now a palette of grays and whites, making the polished hardwoods pop. Except for tile in the kitchen and bathrooms, those wood floors extend throughout the house.

The common areas share a semi-open floorplan, making the home feel quite a bit larger than its modest footprint. A smart layout adds to the effect — there’s very little wasted space and lots of natural light, too.

The kitchen used to be a walled-off galley, which is common in homes of this era. No more! They’ve opened up half a wall looking into the living and dining rooms and it feels like a whole new space (which, in fact, it is). It now features black granite countertops, white cabinetry, a contemporary glass tile backsplash, new fixtures, and stainless steel appliances, including a gas range. Sweet.

An updated master bath offers granite double sinks and an oversized walk-in glass shower. The remodeled hall bath has marble floors and light blue glass subway tile in the bath area.

The backyard often becomes an afterthought in a remodel, but not in this Lake Highlands abode. The owners created a large covered patio with slate tile flooring. This area overlooks the swimming pool with a slide and multiple seating areas.

This home was listed May 31 by Anthony J. Campagna with Campagna Realtors for $354,900. Don’t forget about the open house this Sunday — if you go, we want a full report!

Zoning to DISD let’s one know this is NOT Lake Highlands. Lake Highlands zones to RISD. Anything south of Northwest Highway is not Lake Highlands. I know it can get confusing what with monikers like “Old Lake Highlands” and “Lake Highlands Drive”, etc. but reality is if you aren’t zoned for Lake Highlands schools in RISD, then you aren’t in Lake Highlands.
