Thanks Cheryl but I disagree. He is an ARMED officer of the law and to lose his cool like that tells me he is not fit for the job. Many times, when our kids were teens, we’d have Spirit parties at our home and always had off duty police. Had one reacted like Eric Casebolt I would have been furious. Anyone who carries a gun should have a calm demeanor. But I am concerned that the media focus on the negative actions of police is hurting their image. Our President should take it upon himself to initiate a national pro-police campaign by singling out and lauding those (and there are MANY)who are true guardians and display compassion. I still think of the police as my friends and guardians — but many don’t.
Yes, I totally agree with you here, Candy. As Peter Parker’s Uncle Ben said: “With great power comes great responsibility.” I don’t think Casebolt was acting responsibly to defuse the situation.
If this were any other year, he would have received a reprimand and possible demotion for the way he handled that woman. She was not obeying lawful orders so she is partly to blame. I still say it was absolutely not warranted for him to lose his job. As for him pulling his gun, those guys were moving towards him in an aggressive manner. This officer is having to make a split-second decision; the guy was grabbing on his waist like he was pulling a gun. This officer simply wants to go home alive to his family. As soon as it was assessed that the situation was not threatening to him, he immediately re-holstered it. That part is what is being ignored by the press. He is getting death threats and had to take his family into hiding. Did what he did really warrant this reaction? I guarantee you if this would have been a black officer, this would not even be a conversation. His police chief threw him under the bus and now every single officer on the force will think twice about protecting themselves and sadly one day is going to find that that watch will be their final watch.
As for our President, his attitude towards the police is quite clear, he is not their friend. His administration has done nothing but inflame the situation. So I seriously doubt he will do anything to calm things down.
He should not have to resign. Did he lose his cool, yes, but none of his behavior warranted a resignation.
